However, individual home practices such as taking warm baths, keeping the blisters dry and putting on loose-fitting cotton underclothes may aid with curing of symptoms and might also limit the spread of the virus. Where delivery is due and there is an eruption of the disease, cesarean delivery is undertaken. This is aimed at preventing infection of the baby during delivery. In order for women with frequent genital herpes to be able to deliver vaginally, they should be given antiviral drugs at or before 36 weeks to delivery. This is a recommendation of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
What about prognosis for genital herpes?
As previously mentioned, genital herpes infection cannot be cured. The infection remains throughout the life of the person. Different people have difference in the frequency and severity of outbreaks throughout their life. A person can take antiviral medications as suppressive therapy to lessen the frequency of outbreaks. This is helpful especially for those who experience more recurrent outbreaks.

Even the word “herpes” is a Greek word that means “to creep or crawl” which is the way that the Greeks described the way that skin lesions spread. In Roman times, the emperor Tiberius tried to stop an outbreak of mouth herpes by prohibiting kissing at public events and ceremonies. Soon after Tiberius, a physician named Celsus suggested that herpes be treated by cauterizing the sores with a hot iron. It is unknown how long Tiberius’ ban on kissing lasted or how long Celsus’ treatment was used, but both seem to have ended pretty quickly.…
