George Strait and Dixie Chicks Analysis
1) Unit 16, Video 8, George Strait – “Check Yes or No”
In this video, George Strait uses a very simple chord progression for the chorus and verses. The range he uses in his vocal abilities is minimal but I see and hear many instruments used such as the violin (fiddle), steel guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, electric guitar etc. All of these instruments together create a very honky tank feel to the song. The rock or pop element is missing, lending a more genuine country sound. The background harmonies also make it sound vocally fuller even though his voice and the melody are quite simple.
I picked George Strait’s video as my favorite for a variety of reasons. He came onto that country scene in 1981 with the release of his first single,"Unwound", which went to number four. Since then he has just been getting bigger and bigger. In his career, he has had over 30 number one hits. Although 30 is an astonishing number, this alone is not what has made George a success. His success can be linked to a great number of things. For the women it may be his incredible good looks. The men seem to think of him as a good friend. However, everyone can see that his honesty and uncompromising dedication to the country sound is a major factor in his success. He shows this in his performance as he smiles and croons into the microphone. Playing his acoustic guitar shows his simplicity and roots in country music. I really like the simplicity. With a lot of other music today, things are lost or complicated with effects and showbiz. In 1992, George starred in the film Pure Country. He received rave reviews. He never lets go of his values, even while making the movie. He refused to kiss his leading lady, because he is, in fact, a married man. He has never tried a crossover hit and he has never traded in his cowboy hat. This is mainly because he is not pretending to be a country boy. He is a true cowboy. Even with the new millennium here, George Strait has stuck to

After completing the assigned readings, critically comment on the following prompts: 1. What incident causes a sharp shift in Dixie's perspective, and why? (161-162) It is my assessment that the incident which causes a sharp shift in Dixie’s perspective is when at thirteen years old a group of students whom she envied invited her to the carnival and did not thank her grandfather for giving them a ride nor waited for her when they got out of the car. This experience opened her eyes to how petty and rude the girls she envied really were.…

On one hand, the history of rap music began in the early '70s and its origins and influences came from popular African American and Latino Street culture of New York City. This highly original and innovative approach displayed a new expanded function for the MC (microphone controller or emcee) and highlighted amazing percussion riffs and other rhythmic drum breaks from popular funk and disco music. In the same manner, Country & Western music which was originally called “Hillbilly Music” which is a blend of traditional and popular musical forms traditionally found in the Southeastern United States. It evolved rapidly in the 1920s and will celebrate the century mark soon. The term country music gained popularity in the 1940s when the earlier term “hillbilly music” came to be seen as belittling. It combined traditional folk ballads, gospel songs, and string band music to create a style characterized by instrumental intelligence, and high-pitched vocals. Its history, instruments, and influences are what make Bluegrass one of the most distinctive American forms of music. Bluegrass music is the old time Country music, which has been influenced by Scottish-Irish, British, the blues, Negro spirituals, and gospel music as well. It had its start on the rural south and came about in the 1940’s after World War II. It was a mixture of hillbilly, folk and various types of Country that were popular with the farm families and blue-collar workers. Country music’s origin dates back to the early 1920s. Country music is a good example, people from all over the world listen to it and sing it. As the days go by and people change more and more, music changes as well.
