By the end of Washington’s second term as President of The United States he gave his famous Farewell Address. The address covered topics such as free trade and separation of powers however we will focus on his coverage of political parties.
Washington Warned us about the evils that can come from political parties and the division of the Nation.
He said that when a country divides itself into two or more parties, these parties are seen as enemies and typically weaken the government as a whole.

For example, in California over the past months many left wing supporters have been attacking Trump Supporters attending Trump Rallies. These “Peaceful” Protesters take political parties to a new extreme and prove Washington correct in his declaration that political parties promote riots.
Also, politics gets in the way of what the people want. One thing we see far too often is voting along party lines when the people want change. All it does is promote one party’s agenda instead of doing what the people want. One example is the Iran Nuclear Deal, 49% of voters were against the deal and only 21% were for it (Pew Research Center). Meanwhile in the Senate the Deal was upheld and the will of the people was disreguarded.
Regardless of Washington’s warning over 200 years ago we will likely remain in the two party system well into the foreseeable future and will likely encounter many more issues of partisanship and gridlock. We can only hope that someday we will look back at our first President’s words and think about them and take action. Until that day we are stuck in the divisive two party
