1st paragraph: The nation and opposing political parties had so many different views that it could not have been resolved.
A. The main difference between the north and the south were its economy.
1. The north had an industrially based economy,
giving them more railroads and resources than the south.
2. The south had an agricultural based economy, which meant more exports, cash crops, and slaves.
3. The north and south were so biased towards its own side that they did not care about complying with each other.
B. Political Parties were divided into Republicans and Democrats.
1. The Republicans were founded in the north (1854) was composed of mostly abolitionists and southerners. President Lincoln and the Republicans wanted to end slavery so badly, that they were willing to go to war for it.
2. The Democrats were composed of southerners and pro-slavery members.
3. These opposing views could not have settled over a short period of time
The nation and its parties were hopelessly divided over their views and were not about to change them just to be of the same mind.
2nd paragraph: Compromises made never resolved problems of slavery and territory.
A. The Compromise of 1850 did not answer any questions over slavery and territory.
1. This compromise was made to solve confrontation between slave states in the south and free states in the north, obviously this did not work because the nation still needed another compromise after which still did not help.
2. This compromise also helped the south with capturing runaway slaves.
B. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 repelled the Compromise of 1850 showing that the divergence between the nation was getting stronger and stronger.
1. This act gave people of a territory to decide for themselves to allow slavery or not. (popular sovereignty)
