Gladiator Film Analysis
Violence has been part of human nature for a very long time. Even though ferocity in our reality has been greatly reduced; violence in T.V has greatly increased. We see a lot more blood, murders, and in greater detail. From 1960’s to the Early 2000’s, Movies have greatly changed in terms of violence. The first movie I choose to do was, “Gladiator”. It was released in the year 2000, and also won the Oscar for best picture. The director was Ridley Scott. The motion picture shows a lot of blood and people get slaughtered. In addition, the film has a lot of hand to hand combat with multiple types of arms included; swords, axes, and maces. Most of these scenes were shorter. The encounters that included more than just hand to hand combat tended to last longer. Some more of these missiles were; spears, bows, and catapults. Nearly every violent scene in the film someone dies or multiple people are getting slain. They show a lot of the gore and witness the stabbing being placed. …show more content…
It was released in 1964 and directed by Nick Nostro. The violent scenes are all very short. Most, have no weapons involved in the scene. The movie does show some murders, but you could almost count them all on two hands. There’s a decent amount of encounters that just involve men slapping one another with open fists. I found a video on the movie, but the video needs to be started four mins in. I apologies for that. Video shows one of the fight scenes against the prince (Start at four mins for fight scene). Blood is never displayed in the movie. The violent scenes in this movie are very non graphic with less intensity. When people do actually get stabbed with any kind of weapon the scene is very quick. In one scene, they show a man strangling another man. It was the longest death scene in the movie and lasted roughly around ten to fifteen seconds. Overall for this movie, was not as extreme and the violence was a lot lower

The Roman army was know for its discipline, organization, and innovation in both weapons and tactics.…

In his book, More Than a Movie: Ethics in Entertainment, F. Miguel Valenti examines nine “hot buttons” of violence – “creative elements that filmmakers use to manipulate viewers’ reactions to onscreen violence.” (99) These elements, posited by researchers conducting The National Television Violence Study (Valenti, 99) are “choice of perpetrator, choice of victim, presence of consequences, rewards and punishments, the reason for the violence, weapons, realism, use of humor, and prolonged exposure” (Valenti, 100) .…

By currently taking this History & Philosophy of Sports class, this film “Gladiator” establishes the whole scenery during the time period of ancient Rome. In the film, it introduced Gladiator battles. These Gladiator battles reflected as entertainment to society, as well as, being a survival setting between life and death. Not only they would compete for survival, but they would compete to become the best. By this time, Commodus, is the new Roman emperor and he fears that Maximus could use his heroic ability to dethrone him and become emperor himself. Maximus would use his fame and popularity as a gladiator to invoke further damage to Commodus' insecure dominance of the devoted Roman people, hoping to influence them to restore their lost values and overcome the corruption that…

The Mass Media today is the main reason why our culture is so violence driven. First I am going to start off on the news media and movies that are being viewed by our children and young adults. The news media always seems to project negative things. You rarely hear anything about a city not having an violent acts being placed over the news. Instead you turn the news on and your going to see how a father came home and found his wife cheating on him so he beat her to death, then killed all his children before turning his gun on…

The immediate and alarmist tone of Mike Oppenheim’s inductive essay, “T.V isn’t Violent Enough” is a flawless example of the ineffective strategy that Oppenheim has taken in conveying his rational and completely biased argument. The described imagery of cinema action scenes are unrealistic and not violent enough; Oppenheim’s essay falls victim to the fallacy of authority and Oppenheim confusion of television not being violent enough with television violence being nonsensical.…

What place does violence have in the movies? Well, I believe that violence has a place in movies depending on the particular film and what the director of the film is trying to portray. If the director uses violence in his/her film and there isn't any reason behind it, then I would disagree and say that violence shouldn't be in THAT particular film. But in a movie like "Saving Private Ryan", Steven Spielburg replicates the actual events of D-Day on to the big screen by creating a violent-like scene to get the viewer of an understanding of what U.S. troops had to go through. In other films, we see violence used to test the human soul and to see if he/she/they could overcome trials and tribulations. In the film "Independence Day", Earth was attacked "violently" by aliens; therefore, leaving behind a planet that was almost completely destroyed. The humans, after surviving the attack, joined forces with others around the world and destroyed the alien invasion to regain Earth. In those two cases, I would agree and say that violence should be in the movies. The role of violence in films has been a big one. In some of today's movies, its seems like the films portrays violence, but don't back it up with some reasoning or explanation as to why the character is doing what he/she is doing. "Shootfighter" is movie that comes to mind when I talk about movies with violence without reasoning or explanation. The movie is about two karate instructors and their master going down to Mexico to fight in an illegal shootfighting tournament. During the course of the movie, you witness people getting sliced up and their heads cut off with ninja swords, a fighter raping a girl because she wouldn't do what she was told by the rapist, and other fighters getting set on fire. I can see what the director was trying to do. He probably wanted the audience to get the feeling of being in that environment. But at the same time I have to say that the director neglected to point out the reason as to…
