Globalization’s Impact on Information Technology
According to Carmel (2013), the impact globalization is having on the use of information systems in business is the need to transfer knowledge and information almost instantaneously anywhere in the world. This is because businesses are no longer isolated to just one location and, in order to stay ahead of the competition, accurate information needs to be disseminated quickly and securely. A business could start with the development of their product or service in one country. The development could include many parts which are made in several other countries. The final product could then be put together in another country which will then need to be shipped to the end destination. In order to support this kind of global business, the information may need to be rapidly communicated via an information systems network. The kind of information involved could be everything from how to manufacture, to the supply needed, to the financing, to the transportation needed. This information is constantly changing and needs to be updated and stored for access in one location so that it can be transmitted rapidly to those in need of this information. There is not any time to mail or ship information as this could slow the whole process down and limit the ability of a company to compete in this rapidly changing and evolving global economy. Finally, companies without the ability to use information systems in business put themselves at a distinct disadvantage in a small local economy and, businesses simply cannot compete on the world stage in today’s global economy. Information technology precipitated the integration of global communication, which, in turn, provided a world stage in which companies can now market and sell their products and services through that same technology.
