There was a lot of death, which was very sad. Obviously the civil war was the most costly war in American history in terms of soldiers and people. The relationship between Thomas and Shaw was pretty hard to watch develop because they were childhood friends and when Thomas joined the army, Shaw treated him pretty poorly because he didn’t want to show favoritism. Over time they came to an understanding and solved their problems without much verbal communication. The end was the most emotional because several of the main characters died and had attitude changes. It’s always sad when a main character dies. This movie gives a small idea of what some of the war was like and also what African Americans had to deal with back then.
There were several inaccuracies in the movie; one of these is that the character of Cabot Forbes in the movie is fictional. The real second in command of the 54th regiment was Edward Hallowell. He was a major in Shaw’s regiment and before that he was a Lieutenant in the 20th regiment. The character of Forbes in the movie is named after two friends of the real Colonel Shaw. After the assault on Fort Wagner, Hallowell had sustained three injuries and went home to recover. He came back to become a colonel and command the 54th regiment for the rest of the
