Did you know that most of the food and fibre that we consume on a daily basis is in some way genetically modified? Are we really getting the nutritional value that is promised to us on the labels of these foods? The percentage of our daily consumption that is modified seems incredibly high, so today I would like to explain what genetically modified foods like plants and animals are (the history behind it), other countries and their take on genetically modified foods and what could happen if we continue to consume these genetically modified foods.Genetically modified foods came into history because in the 1800s an Austrian Monk, Gregor Mendel started to experiment with peas. He realized that genes combined to produce a better end result. Soon, genetically modified were first introduced in Canada in 1990s. An example of a genetically modified plants was a tomato plants, which were resistant to caterpillars and takes longer to decompose (stayed fresh longer). Corn crops modified to produce big kernels and resistant to pesticides and herbicides. C. Genetically Modified Animals. For example, the growth hormones injected in cows to produce more milk, and bigger sheep that can produce larger quantities of wool. Other countries have genetically modified foods. In Europe, it is mandatory for farmers to label each product that has been modified In, Canada not required to label its genetically modified foods as of yet. In, India refuses to grow any crops that have been genetically modified because it might be the only choice for India to feed its growing population .
