Gnashedrin Passage Analysis
One of the greatest hindrances to the growth of our spiritual lives and the experience of peace and freedom is unforgiveness. It acts as a drag on our souls, preventing us from walking in the liberty Jesus has given to us. Unforgiveness also plants seeds of bitterness, resentment and unrighteous anger, which grow into barriers which keep us from experiencing intimacy with God and others.

I am amazed as Jesus hung on the cross, at the very moment he was experiencing the fullness of the sin committed against him, that he could pray, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” What may be even more astonishing is the seeing Stephen, a follower of Jesus, echo this same posture of forgiveness, at the very moment he was being battered by stones

Meditation - Take a few moments to slowly read the following passage over several times. Let each reading help focus your heart and mind on the word or thought which stands out to you. Ask yourself: What might the Holy Spirit desire to speak to me from this passage? How does my heart react to what I have heard? When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.

While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. – Acts

“When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am He,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground. Again He asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ And they said, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ ‘I told you that I am he,’ Jesus answered. ‘If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’ Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound Him and brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high…

The main idea of this article was how to train the church community to instill the forgiving model. One of those ideas of how to instill the forgiving model was for forgivers to learn from their forgiveness and understand one must forgive because they have been forgiven for something themselves. He said it was a cold, damp, dreary day as it had raided that morning. Saul had dropped by and asked if he wanted to go with him to the city of Jerusalem to watch as the high priest questioned a Christian and Stephen. He had been accused of blasphemous words against the holy place and the law. He had said that Jesus of Nazarth would destroy the temple and change the laws of Moses. Saul was a leaded of Judaism and knew the inside story, he told grandfather that the high priest had no real evidence against Stephen so they hired men to lie and misrepresent Stephen arguments concerning his Jesus. Grandfather said he knew that Jesus had supposedly risen from the dead and appeared to his followers. They said he…
