Mexico, and John Freemont, American Military Officer, wanted to name the opening that was the San Francisco Bay, “Chrysopylae,” meaning ‘Golden Gate’. The idea of the Golden Gate Bridge, did not come up until 1872, when James H. Wilkins, who was once a railroad executive, had an idea to put a suspension bridge crossing the Golden Gate Strait. The Strait was close to three miles long, a bridge had never been that long before, so many were skeptical.
Starting in 1933, The Golden Gate Bridge started going under construction.
Its original plans were rejected by the city and they had to start over on their blue prints. The bridge was taken under many different structures and such. You know the Golden Gate Bridge as being a bright orange, but little did we know that, that bright orange, was not supposed to be permanent. If it were up to the U.S. Navy, the bridge would be black with yellow stripes. They ended up leaving the bright orange because it was easy for ships to see, and it blended well with the scenery.
Today, The Golden Gate Bridge is a popular attraction, and is used to go from place to place. It is used by at least 112,000 cars per day, leaning to 41 million cars per year. The bridge is one of the most commended structural works to this day. At the time, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest bridge built at that time. Today, the bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world.
All in all, the Golden Gate Bridge is what a lot of tourist come to see when they travel to California. It is one of the main sightseeing spots, all because one man had a vision in creating something, what people thought was
impossible.
