Gonsalves: Painting Analysis
For my final art paper, I chose my favorite work from my favorite artist: Autumn Cycling by Rob Gonsalves. In this piece, the first thing you notice is there are three boys riding bicycles on a street covered in a bed of orange leaves, surrounded by trees without their leaves. There are a few houses on the street, and also some streetlights, which would make it seem as if these boys are riding their bikes in a neighborhood. Though at a closer look, the leaves on the street double as leaves on trees beneath the bicyclists. This picture could be looked at like an optical illusion because if you look underneath the boys, you see they are riding on top of the trees beneath them and there is another person riding a bike on the “lower” road. The …show more content…
The bright orange leaves spread across the street are a perfect indication that it is autumn in this picture. He also makes the bicyclists wear colors that make them stand out from the rest of the painting, such as the blues and purples of their shirts against the oranges and yellows of the leaves. He also uses the element of light to show shadows in highlights given from the sun. This could be used to give the trees and the bicyclists a realistic touch while also making it evident where the sun is at this part of the day. We can tell the source of light, the sun, is on the left of the picture since the leaves and the bike rider on the left are much lighter and brighter than those on the right, plus the shadows are shown to be on the right side of the trees and …show more content…
This use of proportion is very important because it indicates there is a great distance between the upper and lower cyclists. It really brings the picture together, because if the people on the top and the bottom of the picture were the same size, the illusive effect would be completely lost and the picture wouldn’t be nearly as unique or interesting. Also, this picture uses balance to put equal emphasis on all sides of the picture, not just left to right, but from top to bottom as well. From left to right, the picture is well balanced in that there are a row of trees on each side, there are bike riders on each side, and the leaves are evenly distributed between both sides. On a vertical analysis, there are plenty of details on the upper part of the picture, and the same can be said about the lower part of the picture. This use of balance lets the entire image be equally important and not have a certain focal point or area the stands out as more important than the rest.

The painting Autumn Cycling is made from acrylic paint and painted on a canvas. The artist Rob Gonsalves, who was born in Toronto, Canada in 1959, painted this piece in 1994. Gonsalves is known for his use of surrealism and his style of magic realism. His knowledge of architecture helped with his

The prime focus of this piece is Mt.Hood, which is centered in the middle of the picture plane halfway up the canvas. The mountain in the piece is opaque as there are no t-intersections within it. Behind the mountain various tones of orange, red, purple, and yellow are used to create a stunning sunset. Underneath the mountain, short straight strokes of numerous shades of green, blue, orange, and purple were used to create an image of thousands and thousands of trees. Close to halfway on the canvas, the image of Mt.Hood, the sunset, and the rows of trees is reflected on the water of Trillium Lake. Tehan utilizes the same colors she used in the top half of the canvas to create the reflection on the water. Centered on the bottom of the canvas towards the left side of the piece is a railing painted using various tones of brown, black, purple, yellow, pink, and orange. Tehan's delicate use of her pallet knife allowed her to create straight geometric lines for the railing. It also allowed her to give the railing an illusory texture.…

Even though she uses one mountain as the main focus, in the background there are other mountains and road leading into the distance. In the forefront of the painting there are trees and the road. I think that balance is more informal or asymmetrical because of the main focus of the one mountain, but somehow…

In the painting we see a very clear argument Cole the artist is trying to convey. A very distinct line down the middle of the scene creates a clear border between the untouched wilderness that Cole and his Hudson River School are known for. On the other side of the border lays clear skies with farmland and developed land, which gives the notion that a storm is either coming or subsiding as the wilderness part of the piece is drenched by storm. The actual light of the piece appears to have minimal effect. Implied…

The Red Tree depicts a young girl moving about her days almost consumed by depression and sadness. However Tan indicates that even when things seem overwhelming there is hope for a better day. In illustration ___ we see the salient image of a young girl trapped in a bottle by her oversized diving helmet. Her posture clearly indicates that she is unhappy and the bottle is slowly filling with water. There is no chance of escape as her oversized helmet clearly will not fit out the narrow neck of the bottle. Tan’s effective use of dark blue and grey further conveys the sombre mood and difficulty the young girl is facing. Through effective use of vector lines the viewer’s eyes are drawn along the horizon to contrasting white clouds, symbolising perhaps that there is hope on the horizon. Tan further emphasizes the sadness consuming the protagonist in illustration __. The salient image of a gigantic fish hangs over the young girl walking alone along a city street. The fish’ gaping mouth creates a vector line to the young girl who is hunched over and clearly unhappy, as she remains in the shadow of the fish while everyone else goes about their business ignoring her. Again, Tan’s…

This piece of art was created by Claude Monet. He is known as the classic impressionist. In this painting, he captures the ever-changing nature of light and color. Unlike a lot of paintings, you can see the brush strokes in this painting. But I believe that the brush strokes used help create the piece of art and they help show the leaves and flowers on the trees. Also, it helps make the clouds in the sky look more hazy and beautiful.…

In the bottom left area of the painting you see a group of trees that are light green on its top leaves but a darker green for the leaves not seen. There is one subjected tree with a form behind that looks like it is a rose bush with its brightly red flowers. Past that rose bush like figure the trees go beyond it blurring out. Now you are focusing on the bottom middle. There is a small splotch of dark brown that looks as though it is a bare area in the greeny field.…

The colors surrounding them in the background seem lacking and without life. The grass seems to be in the process of losing life from the brownish green color in all the visible lawns. The sun is the brightest part of the picture. The sunset is also creating a focal point on the wall and the boys. A sun setting tends to signify the end of something.…
