Wow the irony. Growing up 10 minutes outside of Boston, I knew where Dorchester was, but more importantly I knew what is was known for: white trash, gangs, poverty, drugs, subsidized housing: an image had been painted in everyone’s mind that Dorchester was where scum rotted on street corners and gangs controlled the minds of the neglected and worthless youth, yet 10 minutes away, my town resided, a town with descendants of the same Irish Catholics; however, these children were fed with a golden spoon from birth.

It is not her fault. My Cousin Brittany did not choose that life. Will Hunting did not choose that life. No one chooses that life. People overlook the agonizing pain others are subjected to and instead choose to label and berate those born into poverty, born into a shitty situation, but like Sean McGuire whole heartedly spews, “It's not your fault. It's not your fault!”
Will hunting, a boy with an IQ higher than anyone else on this earth, was defined by his backstory. In the movie Good Will Hunting, two major words emulate from the presence of the main character Will Hunting: he is smart and he is useless. People are blown away that MIT and Harvard students do not have half the intelligence of that “low-life” janitor from Southie. Our society feels the need to judge everyone. You aren’t defined by what you could be or what you are able to do, but by how you act, what you look like and where you live. Does every extra zero on your income translate to an extra point on your IQ?

The amount of swears to exit one’s mouth, the pronunciation of certain words, the clothes that adorn their body, the phrases they choose to use and most importantly the location of their house inevitably pins them to a certain society made label… And that it what makes the plot of this movie so important. The Boston accent isn’t necessarily pleasant, for the rough cease of words missing the letter “r” spoken ever so quick lacks any tone of regality. The phrases like “wicked” and the profanity embedded in the culture off sets the meaning behind the phrase, “My boy’s smaht”. The division between borders goes beyond the physical markings of each section of the city. On one side of the city, lives the “white trash” and on the other the Harvard students are taught by world renowned professors. The comradery seen within each section of Boston virtually disappears when it come to the city as a whole.
