Google’s Country Experience: France, Germany, Japan Background
Founded on September 4 . 1998, Google quickly revolutionized the search engine and the Internet alike. Within two years of starting operations Google had become the largest single search engine in the world and began to dominate the market. As the World Wide Web (web) grew in popularity and became more and more a part of everyone’s daily life, Google too grew in popularity “because it could provide simple, fast, and relevant search results”. The differentiating factor was Google’s “PageRank technology which displays results…by looking for keywords inside web pages, but also gauging the importance of a search result based on the number and popularity of other sites that linked to the page”.
The use of Google has always been free to the user, the two revenue-generating avenues that have made Google one of the most profitable companies of the last decade is advertising and selling its technology. Google’s advertising branch is called AdWords and allows those wishing to advertise to “create ads and choose keywords, which are words or phrases related to the business. When people search on Google using keywords, ads appear next to or above search results” (Google.com).
Problems
The rapid rise and dominance of Google in search and other web areas, prompted concerns in a number of countries. Google had to defend itself several different lawsuits. Fear of US dominance over the local cultures to the kind of information it provided was what caused the lawsuits against Google. Google was demanded to censor its search results to government regulations. Several different advertisers sued Google in France and the courts mostly ruled in favor of the advertisers. Google lost a court case in Germany and was asked to remove

Google’s greatest creation is its Internet search engine. In 2008 it is estimated that Google earned more than $4 billion in profits and more than 95% of that profit was tied to its advertising coming from its search engine. Google’s search engine was able to revolutionize the way an Internet search engine gave results to a particular search that was conducted. A basic search engine would stack results based on the amount of times your search term appears on each site. On the other hand, Google stacks its results based on its relevance and importance to that…

    2. Why did many governments appear threatened by Google? How did they counter this threat? Discuss each country separately. Many governments seemed threatened by Google out of fear of US dominance over the local cultures, to the kind of information that Google censor its search results according to government regulations. This would lead to many law suits. Google has been viewed by many countries as a threat to their cultural value and norms. In France they attempted to set up a local search engine called Quaero, in conjunction with Germany in order to deter people from using Google. Germany attempted creating its own search engine called Theseus when the country backed out of the joint search engine with France. Even Japan launched what they deemed the Grand Voyage Project in an effort to create a proprietary search and information retrieval functions.…

Google has become the top search engine in the world. It is used so much that the word “Google” is not only a noun, a person place or thing for those who can’t recall those days in grammar school. But also a verb, a word that conveys action or a state of being, like Xerox means “to copy.” Obviously the preverbal bar has been set. Ironically, Google is fighting in the courts to keep its name out of the dictionary, much as Xerox fights to keep its name from being used as an equivalent to photocopying. The legal argument is as the name becomes more commonly used, it becomes less of a brand, detracting from its proprietary nature. Google has also spawned products, projects, concepts, and imitations galore. It is safe to say that Google is not just an Internet search engine but has become something of a phenomenon (Searcher; June 2004 Vol.12 Issue 6, p.26-32).…
