Google’s core business is search. The majority of their business decisions revolve around optimizing, monetizing, and improving the search engine. They have perfected their search technology to such extent that hundreds of thousands of companies have purchased their technology in order to deliver relevant information to their users. Another way Google has made the search profitable is through their creation of advertising technology. They are the most visited search engine on the internet by a great deal. As of April 1st, 2013 Google has 900 million unique monthly visitors and their closest competitor was Bing with 165 million unique visitors. This high number of visitor traffic creates their ability to track users search patterns and helps companies decide which ads are relevant to their users on their sites.
As far as the search engine goes, Google has many competitors. Their three most significant and traditional competitors are Bing, Yahoo, and Ask.com. When it comes to their search and advertising technology, they seem to be untouched at the moment. Because of their vast collection of data over the years and their continuous growth, they undoubtedly have the best service. One of their non-traditional competitors is the Siri technology that Apple has produced. Although this technology can only be used on a mobile device, there is a hypothesis that it is lowering Google’s search numbers. There has not been any data or articles published to prove such information though.
Google grows by making the user feel valued and providing additional resources for the user. Through their continuous growth and acquisition of devices and applications for Google users, their growth is inevitable. As of now there is nothing that can compete with YouTube, Gmail is the go-to free email, and their Maps application has essentially taken over the market share that Mapquest once had.
