Entry #3 : comic strip Comic strip – Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson
In this comic strip, bully is archetypal character and this kid represents as a punk and gangster because, he uses his strength and power to harm and frighten little kid. When little kid asked “Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size?” he responded “They’d hit back” and he punched a little kid by showing his strength and intimidate him. This shows that he is threatening someone who is weaker than him. The other small kid who is getting attack by bully kid represents as a flake, stereotypical character. He couldn’t defend himself or resist from bully which shows this character as a flake. People will also think this kid as an archetype character by getting physical attack by bully. This comic is telling that it is important to create society with some measure of fairness and justice, where the strong can’t entirely take advantages of the weak. This is criticizing of a society that strong is always strong to the weak and weak to the strong. This comic strip had effects on the audience by telling them that the strong have a duty to protect the weak. These are the effects it had on the audience.

The number of multiracial students has soared domestically, according to a recent survey. The survey by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology showed that the number of students from interracial families has reached 46,954 this year, up 21 percent from a year earlier. The number is a fivefold spike from 9,389 in 2006. The figure accounts for 0.7 percent of all primary and secondary school students in Korea. “If the current trend continues, multiracial students will represent more than 1 percent of the country’s primary and secondary school students by 2014,” the education ministry predicted. In regards to nationality of the students’ parents, China topped the list with 33.8 percent, followed by Japan with 27.5 percent, the Philippines with 16.1 percent and Vietnam with 7.3 percent.
The survey was carried out by the Korean Education Development Institute on 11,390 elementary, middle and high schools nationwide. As of last year, there were about 250,000 interracial families in Korea, says the ministry. Yet the upward trend in the number of multiracial family and children in the country has brought up hordes of societal problems. Nearly 40 percent of the students from multiracial families drop out of school. They face bullying in the school environment and have to overcome poverty at home. To counter this, the government has come up with a number of measures to help these children adapt better both at school and in society. One of them is to offer Korean language and culture classes. However, the society where cultural diversity can be accepted without prejudice is most urgently needed.

“Billy Elliot”
(10.13.2000)
Directed by Stephen Daldry
Running time: 90 minutes. This film is rated R.
WITH: Julie Walters (Mrs. Wilkinson), Gary Lewis (Dad), Jamie Bell (Billy), Jamie Draven (Tony) and Adam Cooper (Billy, aged 25).
“Billy Elliot” is a story about an eleven year boy living in a coal mining town in northern England who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. Because his father was embarrassed at his son’s goals, Billy had to secretly train with Mrs. Wilkinson. At the end, Billy’s father realized his son’s potential of ballet dancing and opened his heart to supports Billy. Throughout Mrs. Wilkinson and Billy’s father efforts, Billy becomes a beautiful swan that he always imagined of.
One of the reviewers named A. O. Scott, mentioned “ ''If you go out to find life, you lose other things,'' Mrs. Wilkinson tells Billy, and, like the movie at its best, her words are no less true for being platitudinous.” Another reviewer, named Roger Ebert said that “this movie illustrates the difference between how children and adults see the world.”
He also mentioned about Billy’s dad character, “Billy's dad, a supporter of the strike, not only begins to understand his son's dream, but actually becomes a strikebreaker to get money for Billy to attend an important audition. I can believe a coal miner supporting his son's dancing dreams, but anyone who believes he would become a scab to raise the money doesn't know much about union miners.”
This movie is dealing with humanity’s timeless concerns such as courage, age, and beauty. Because when the main actor, Billy told his father that he wants to make a road of future to become a ballerino, his father refuged Billy that just because he is too young for a ballet dancer he is a boy. This is one of the gender and cultural stereotypes that his father has. However, Billy stood in front of his father by showing his effort with his courage and beauty. This movie contains stereotype and archetype characters.
Mrs. Wilkinson is an archetype character as a guardian to Billy. Because, she looked after Billy like his own son and pushed him to make successful audition to take a place in the Royal Ballet School. Jackie Elliot, Billy’s dad is a stereotype character as a Wiseman and a Hero. He made Billy’s future bright and sacrifices himself to let Billy can fly in the sky. Billy Elliot is an archetype character because he represented as a sidekick of Mrs. Wilkinson. Finally, Billy’s grandmother is a stereotypical character. I want to describe her as a couch potato and a bum because she watches TV all the time and has no interest in family at …show more content…
all. Reviewers in this movie analyze the movie’s ability to reach the intended audience by telling them what kind of plot this story has and what characteristics each characters have. He told the audience how this family opens their heart to care and love each other and how they became one family again. I agree with the reviewer’s opinion. Many people were empress by Billy’s father reactions and Mrs. Wilkinson who supported Billy to become a great dancer. But reviewers should have added more about Billy’s passionate of being a ballet dancer. It would have been better to reach the intended audience if they added how he practiced hard every night alone and how he showed his enthusiasm to the audience.
