GPS Systems
Global Positioning Systems When my aunt and I were driving on the highway to New Mexico we got lost and started to wonder “What happens now?” well we figured find the map in the backseat, so I did, and we still were utterly confused. When people happen to be lost anywhere the most obvious thing we do is get a map, (if you have one) and try to figure out where you are and where you are going. If you have any type of GPS System though you can simply put in the directions and it will direct you to your destination. Well after hours of confusion my aunt and I arrived in New Mexico and the next day we went to the mall and bought a GPS System for her so that we would no longer waste time with a map and get lost!
A GPS system helped my aunt and I return safely back to Texas on the right roads the next couple of days. Many people in America and all over the world today use GPS Systems in their vehicles, boats, or handheld devices to help them get safely to their destinations. This is one of the many examples of why global positioning systems exist and are helpful to society today. The thought for global positioning systems originated from the use of networked ground-based radio navigation systems. In 1957, United States scientist started to track the launch of Russia’s spacecraft Sputnik, which was the first artificial satellite that orbited Earth. Within time scientist observed that the frequency of the radio signal that was transferred by the Russian satellite, Sputnik increased as the satellite neared and lesser as it moved away from Earth, this all happening because of the Doppler Effect. The Doppler Effect is the change in a frequency of a wave concurring to the relative movement of the source of the wave and the observer. Today the United States have a network of U.S. Satellites in space called, Navstar. They provide global positioning systems (GPS) services, with at least 24 satellites in orbit, which both military and civilians use for navigation. There

The GPS system is used to track down a certain location or to reach a destination. The GPS system is very common in law enforcement agencies. For example, if a car is stolen or a criminal is on the run and it has a GPS system in it, the officers can use this device to track the car down. The GPS will give the current location of the car which would help officers to find the victim and follow them. Officers also use the GPS system to locate another patrol car. Cellphones is another popular device law enforcement uses. Cellphones can be used in numerous ways during any situation. For example, if a teenage girl is kidnapped but is able to still use her cellphone to call nine one one, officers can try to trace her call. By tracing the call, it will be able to give off a location or give a close range of the location to help find the girl. Another popular technical device law enforcement agencies use is surveillance equipment. Surveillance equipment is used to watch and keep track of a individual or a place and their activities. For example, if a drug dealer is going out everyday to sell drugs and officers need proof of that to convict him or her, they…

There are many advantages of the use of GPS-enabled smartphones to businesses. some of the advantages are for the person using it or even the businesses who own them however there is also some major advantages for the public and the customer as well. One major advantage for the man or woman driving your delivery's is finding your way too the customers house or even shop. Phone's GPS how a days will be able to get you to appointments on time, even if you're in a strange city far from home. Most GPS software will even alert you of major traffic delays and find you an alternate route. This is a massive plus for everyone, the driver and customers and even the shop or manufacturer. This is because the customer gets there order or product on time and to there house and doesn't need to track there package down because it has been delivered to the wrong address. Also for the driver of the delivery company because they get too the peoples houses on time and if they go to the right houses they wont have too work over shifts. Finally it is a positive for the cooperation or shop selling the goods because there will be no complaints about being late or too the wrong address so more happy customers means more money too them. Secondly another advantage is the way you can plan your's and the customers day with the use of GPS-enabled smartphones. Most smartphone GPS's usually have a device on it that tell's you what time you will get too a specific destination for example the customers address or shop. This has too be the most important aspect for mostly customers as individuals because with the use of GPS-enabled smartphones we don't have too sit in the house from 7 am till 7 pm waiting in all day because they don't give you a specific time that it will be delivered. So this would be very helpful too the customer because it would give a smaller and more spersice time your goods would be delivered too your house or a shop so you don't have too wait in all day but it also gives you…

A more complex application of triangulation occurs in a global positioning system (GPS). A GPS consists of one or more earth-based receivers that accept and analyze signals sent by satellites to determine a receiver’s geographic location. GPS receivers, found in handled navigation devices and many vehicles, use triangulation to determine their location relative to at least three geostationary satellites. According to Sanders, the geostationary satellites are the fixed points in the triangulation formula (Understanding Satellites and Global Positioning Systems).…

Satellites have benefited our everyday lives. "Communication satellites are responsible for instantaneous television coverage of events all over the globe, for the speed of international banking and finance, for the almost-immediate delivery of vast amounts of information, and for international e-mail and telephone service to all parts of the Earth." ("Neal 186") When a person watches television, the television is sent from the station to a satellite and to a local provider. Without satellites, a person would be able to only watch local stations, but with satellites a person can watch a television program from anywhere in the world, talk to anyone, or even send e-mail.…

    Militarization of space

Over time, it has become evident that space is an important arena for the military activities and ambitions of the world powers. The idea of war in space has moved from the area of science fiction based assumptions to become part of arms control and arms race discussions. Its estimated that about 75% of the total number of satellites in the earth’s orbit are mainly being used to carry out military activities like early warning, navigation, communication and surveillance. The great importance of satellites to the military has as a result stirred military planners to come up with anti-satellite systems. Additionally, there have been extensive studies in different defense departments regarding the feasibility of different space based systems in being employed in attacking ground targets and disabling attacking strategic enemy missiles (Mowthorpe 5). These recent advances in technology and the incorporation of space capabilities in war fighting and security doctrines have transformed security perceptions and the nature of warfare, signaling the use of space as a new domain for leveraging superiority and competition.…

The launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 heralded the dawn of a new age. The very first launch has not only sparked the Space Race between the Soviet Union and United States, it has also made the deployment of military and commercial satellites into an almost routine task. Since Sputnik, satellites have advanced in sizes and varieties. Satellites are now capable of detecting and destroying incoming warheads, relaying thousands of phone calls, tracking changes in weather patterns, observing distant planets and galaxies, surveying and prospecting for natural resources, etc. (www.spacetoday.org, satellites.spacesim.org). With the aid of real-time weather forecasts, on-site reporting, satellites have grown so powerful that only 3 satellites (www.history.nasa.gov) are needed to have network coverage of the whole world.…
