rocks that are found in the Grand Canyon are about 2 billion years old. Wesley Powell was the first to use the name “Grand Canyon” after it had previously been known as the “Big Canyon” or “Great Canyon”, so they just went with Grand Canyon.

However, some theorize that the Colorado River began forming the Canyon nearly 17 million years ago” This shows that the Colorado River had begun to form the Grand canyon 17 million years ago.
