On that hand, there is the promise of parties, living college life to the fullest, meeting pretty sorority girls, and indulging in the wild, alcohol-soaked adventures. Lambert states that fraternities have their roots in the early college curriculum, when most colleges and universities taught the classics instead of the liberal arts. She feels that fraternity recruitment differs by campus. Typically, recruitment takes place at the beginning of the fall semester. Lastly, Lambert identifies that unfortunately, sometimes the pledge process can get of control and turn into something else entirely: hazing.…
There are over 170 clubs and organizations if students do not find a fit he/she are allowed to create their desired club and/or organization. Students are provided advisors to write by-laws of their desired organization of choice. Students change and grow throughout their college journey, and student affair professionals are making sure they assist students to follow their desired trajectory. Most of the student life programs allow students to focus on their intellectual skill development and knowledge…
In this fieldwork, I am presenting Delta Sigma Phi from the point of the members themselves. To understand their current lives, it was necessary to immerse myself in the culture and learn about their thoughts about Greek life, their experience as part of the community and future plan as a member. My goal is to reveal the unique aspect of the fraternity I chose.…
The Fraternity and Sorority Life Relations Office aims to foster academic success, brotherhood/sisterhood, civic engagement, and leadership within Georgia Southern University’s campus. They are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and is located in the Russell Union. They watch over the 37 chapters which are represented by the interfraternity council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Panhellenic Association. Membership into these organizations provides many different benefits such as: opportunities to give back to the community through community service and philanthropies, networking with alumni, providing leadership opportunities, and enhancing your academic success. Although this is a large organization, there is a…
I took a trip to Greek town Casino in Detroit Michigan with my father, this trip was something of an unexpected trip but I figured it was a great place to observe the behaviors of many different cultures as Greek town casino is the home of a multicultural society. I wanted to observe the behaviors of those between African American’s and Caucasian persons. I wanted to see if one race over the other tended to gamble more or if one culture got more aggressive as the night went on.…
Coming into Christopher Newport, a definite goal of mine was to find my best friends. I wanted to find the people who I would have standing next to me on my wedding day, cry with, laugh with, and eat an entire pizza with and not feel the least bit guilty. I know it is an extremely cheesy antidote, but not once did I think I would find that in any sorority.…
Alexandra Robbins and Georgianna L. Martin argue in their The Wall Street Journal 2015 article, “Should Colleges Get Rid of Fraternities?” if colleges should remove fraternities. Especially, Robbins believes that fraternities harm college community and involve in risky situations. However, Martin thinks that fraternities are an important part of university life. Robbins states that some fraternity members show some serious misbehaviors and danger their and other students’ lives by supplying alcohol, committing rape in order to prove fraternities are dangerous and should be removed. On the other hand, Martin reveals that they are academically successful and respectful community and they offer an experience in a unique community based on social…
I thought that this type of life wasn’t for me. My perspective changed when I met some of the talented, responsible, studious men of the organization, known as Phi Iota Alpha at SIU. I realized that this fraternity is a place where I belong. If I were to have honor to be accepted into this organization, I would hope to gain a range of leadership opportunities from events that are hosted. I’m looking to gain a networking and academic support system where I can have someone to guide me when I am on the wrong path. Most importantly, if I were to join Phi Iota Alpha, I’m looking to get a family/brotherhood because I admire how they’re unified amongst themselves and demonstrate this unity on campus. This brotherhood would allow me to share my culture with those that understand where I come from and will help me learn about the Hispanic community associated with Greek life and the campus. Thank you for considering me as a candidate, I think I can be a great asset to Phi Iota…
Most people do not have the ability to think of college without thinking of some sort of Greek life organization. Whether that thought is negative or positive may vary, but it is rare to think of any time in a college of any sort without thinking of a fraternity or a sorority at all. This is to be expected because most of these groups have somewhat dominated their campuses for hundreds of years, or since their particular chapters were formed. Supporters of Greek life, especially of fraternities, argue that being involved in Greek life organizations encourages brotherhood, the development of leadership skills, and the participation in philanthropic organizations throughout the students’ collegiate career.…
The Greeks. You’ve seen them on TV. You see the posts on Twitter and Facebook. You constantly see the strange symbols that look like some sort of calculus, and the hand signs that look sort of like gang signs, and you are clueless on what they stand for. Most people still judge Greek life based on the stereotypes such as, sorority girls are “preppy and stupid” and men in fraternities are “rich jocks”. How can you be sure that Greek life is the life for you? Below are several things to give and thought to and consider before you decide to rush into a Greek life…
Everyone has heard the saying, “Men are from Mars and women are from Venus,” so it should come as no surprise that in many situations the two genders are separated and treated differently. In the midst of the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek-letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to become members. A natural question for someone such as myself, is what impact does participation in Greek life have on individuals ' attitudes and behaviors, both in the short and long term? Because I 've never been a member of any girl-only group other than sports teams, I didn 't know much about sororities when I started observing Sigma Kappa (SK). But…
The first step to constructing something is always the foundation. My freshman year will be the foundation for the continuation of my college education and experience. This year will be a clean state, an empty container, a fresh beginning. I have the opportunity to gratify it with whatever I desire in hopes of enriching my persona. My initial week of college, I will be presented with an amalgam of opportunities and organizations to become involved with varying from Greek life to intramural rugby to student government. I plan on going through the recruitment process in the fall to become a member of a sorority. A common misapprehension about joining a sorority is that you are purchasing your friends; conversely this is not the case. A sorority is a wonderful organization to get involved…
As a female graduating high school I look forward to the college experience and tend to dream of joining the long life time sisterhood club also known as a sorority. Pledging for my favorite clique and taking the essential steps to one day become a “big sister”, I know that this will be an unforgettable experience for me. Like always there are the good side of things and there are the worst side of things however, some people can debate that at times it’s as fun as it sounds while others hold on to the thought of it being corruptive to the mind.…
It is good to become involved on campus in the beginning of the semester that will continue along a student's college career. From the beginning of the semester, I am an active participant in greek life at Old Dominion University. However, I was unprepared for the extra financial obligations that were included each month. Every month active members are required to pay our dues of forty-six dollars. On occasions, extra expenses including apparel are added into our month…
Being a member of a sorority or fraternity can negatively impact your grades. Students that are members of a greek organization spend their average week going out more than once or twice, versus a student not associated with a greek house. A study done at Georgia College and State University by students doing a project having to do with finding the correlation between being a greek member and their GPA showed that, “Students not in a sorority or fraternity go out on an average 1 to 2 nights a week”, while students that are affiliated in a greek house “...go out on an average 3 to 4 nights a week” (Salleras). Although this study can’t prove that students would rather stay in and study it still shows that being a member of a sorority of…
