Greek Mythology Research Paper
According to Webster’s Dictionary, myth is “a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon.” Myths have a lot of influence on who we are as a person and how we make sense of the world. Myths originate from Ancient Greeks that used mythology as a means of describing their beliefs in religious heroes and gods. There are two sides to every story and since myths are perceived to be stories, they also have two sides a positive side and negative side. Over the course of my paper I will discuss both the positive and negatives sides of how myths teach us life lessons, how they give us hope, and how they can turn something negative …show more content…
For young kids a good myth would be the Tooth Fairy. Losing a tooth can really hurt, but knowing once you lose that tooth and put in under your pillow that the tooth fairy will come and replace it with money. Kids would feel better about the situation and therefore, turning a negative into a positive one. A good example for adults would be the power of money. Money has the power to influence our lives. We think that we need money to make us happy, but in reality there are very important things money cannot buy like: love and happiness. We get love and happiness from our family and friends. People who think that money brings happiness will never be able to fill that void because they will never be content with what they have, they will always want more. People who do not have a lot of money can be jealous of the people who do, but if you look at the bigger picture they look elsewhere for fulfillment in their lives. They accept who they are as a person and find happiness that does not come from materialistic things. People may look at not having a lot of money as a bad thing, but these people seem to be the

A Myth is a traditional story, specifically one concerning early history of a people group explaining some natural phenomenon or social occurrence typically involving the supernatural. It comes from the Latin word mythus which means speech, thought, story, or anything delivered by word of mouth. Mythology is simply an attempt to answer the unknown. It implemented a sense of security to the ancients who could not explain the aspects of the universe with science or reason as we can today. These stories transformed ancient Greek and Roman cultures, creating literature, architecture and social laws. As society grew and new ideas were formed, mythology became exceedingly irrelevant. Soon Western cultures stopped worshiping a plethora of gods and replaced the fear of the unexplained with curiosity. Though the spiritual importance of mythology is irrelevant today, mythology has created the building blocks of modern society; through literature,…

As you grow up, you have always been told stories to either scare you into not doing something, like if you don't go to bed, the boogeyman will come and get you; or stories that give you hope, inspire you, make you dream, or help you to the next step in your life. You've heard these stories from your parents, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles; you've practically heard a story from everybody in your family down to the old lady who lives down the street. People just want you to learn from their mistakes or to let you know that things will always work out. Some stories are based on real life experiences while others are simply myths. A myth is defined as: "A traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors,…

Storytelling is a way to explain the unknown, provide moral and ethical guidelines, and put good and bad human interactions into context for children. With the gods, heroines, and villains in Greek Mythology, children can be taught about values, courage, treachery, weakness, and the flaws of human nature. While the myths of the Greek gods are centered in the religion and culture of the ancient times, the stories continue to be parables to teach and entertain children today. The mystery and supernatural fears of ancient Greece have been overtaken by modern times, but the fundamentals of human nature remain unchanged and create opportunities to teach in a way that captures the imaginary…

“The characters, stories, themes and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for thousands of years. They appear in Renaissance paintings such as Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Raphael’s Triumph of Galatea and writings like Dante’s Inferno; Romantic poetry and libretti; and scores of more recent novels, plays and films.” I think that it is great that the ancient Greeks came up with these myths. When I first started reading and listening about the Greek myths, I thought they were totally absurd. However, I now think that some myths tell entertaining stories and teach great lessons. Through this paper I will tell you about one of the myths we share today in our culture, share what Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung had to say about mythic structures of the human psyche, and explain why myths such as these bring us together socially and culturally.
