Group Work Is A Bad Idea In Schools
Everyone tries to portray that group projects always work out- everyone does their part, helps others when needed, and turns all parts in on time to not affect the grade on the whole project. But is this really the case? I believe that group work is a bad idea in schools. Everything from the bad partners someone could be paired with, having all the weight put on their shoulders because someone did not bring their part, and finding the time to meet up. When it all ends, who is really the victim here? Is it the teacher that has to hear the complaints made, or could it be the stress that is pressed onto the students, who- in the usual school setting- have a lot already occupying the time needed for other school work (end?). Starting from elementary …show more content…
This is even worse when it comes to group projects. The people you are with can forget certain essentials for the project at hand. One example is notes. If someone were to forget their notes-and it is their notes, meaning no one else has them- then the project might be held back by the materials they don’t have, which leads to the next topic. We all know some teachers assign specific dates for parts of the project to be turned in, or so they can see what you have done in the timespan they gave you. Now, if you assigned particular parts so the weight would be distributed, you would probably expect your partner to have it done, right? But some people do not think of the dates, or they forget them, so instead, they just don’t do the part and the grade ends up going down because it was not turned in on time. Also with the idea of the project, some people do not even know what the project is. They had never taken notes, never go to the class, or have no idea how an event happened or how something is done (considering what the project is about). This can cause stress to build up on the person who does know, considering they don’t just forget the project at home. All of this can lead to a very tantalizing painful days work for the person who has everything they need and knows what they are

We are third (or fourth) year students, so you can say that everybody knows how to work in a project group. However, this doesn’t mean that everybody will act like that. Sometimes there are people in a group who are less motivated then others, or people who are dealing with personal problems. Everybody has their own role/function within the project. To make sure everybody performs…

Homework assignments and projects will be group work. But, no free riders please! Every one in the group should contribute equally. Even though in general each member in a group will get the same grade as others, if a certain member did not do his/her share, the other group members could remove him/her from the group and this individual would obtain zero grade. The instructor may also demand the group members to state their individual contributions to the project/assignment in order to determine a fair distribution of the grades.…

Another problem is that some members of the group will not get their work done on time to allow another group member to start working on theirs. Sometimes some work in required before a different part of the project can be started. If the person in charge of the work prior does not get it completed it would delay beginning the next part.…

The definition of a group is “two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, who have come together to achieve particular objectives” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 277). As a group, you can either work together well, or poorly. Groups can appoint individual members to certain parts of assignments, or individual tasks and then collaborate later together in a group discussion. This can cause functional or dysfunctional conflict. Functional conflict can be worked through even when individuals have different points of view (conflict). Dysfunctional conflict however, can ruin the integrity of the group and cause extreme conflicts. “One researcher says that the problems of brainstorming demonstrate the problems of groups. If you leave groups to their own devices, he says, they’re going to do a very miserable job” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 278).…

I remember a time in school when we had to do a project with a team of classmates. We were supposed to come up with an idea for a business and set up everything about the business such as the name, type of business, how it would be managed and so on. There were four students in the group and we were able to get many different ideas about what type of business we should have and what the names would be. Each person was able to be in charge of different parts of assignment, and that way no one was required to do a large amount of work in a set time. Although we did get an A, there were some failures as well. Some students in the group were more willing to give input and weren’t afraid to speak up about their ideas. Others had to be pushed for ideas and tended to go along with what the others thought was a good decision even if they might not have agreed. Even when it was time to divvy of the work, there were discrepancies. I particularly didn’t like the idea of giving each person something different to do, only because some in the group didn’t really care about the project as much as others and I felt they weren’t trying their best on their part. It might have been better in my opinion to work…

The Health Fair Presentation project was one of my favorite assignments so far in my college career. I have never really been a fan of group projects because there is rarely an even work distribution; and being the student that I am, I usually end up doing the most work. However, this was not the case in my groups project. We all did a fairly even amount of work. Our group started out with four people, which is already a smaller group compared to some other, and one student dropped the course half way into the project so we ended up doing our project in a group of three. There were five jobs to split up and we all picked up the slack to make sure the project was done on time, and done well.…

Groups may be defined in many ways, indeed providing an absolute definition of a group, as with much of the theory around group work, is highly problematic and contestable. However for the purposes of discussing groupwork within a context of working with young people we may define a group as a small gathering of young people. Group work may simplistically be described as the study and application of the processes and outcomes experienced when a small group comes together.…

In my opinion, group work is a type of cooperative learning that helps people to accomplish a certain task in a faster and more effective manner. Team working also helps to achieve the tasks that are impossible to finish by one individual. However, if people in a group have a lot of conflicts, group work will not be able to achieve as much as we expected. There are many reasons which lead to dissatisfaction in group work such as individualism as well as conflicts in opinion and time.…

Gender discrimination can be directed towards someone women, men, homosexuals, or drag queens alike. In Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel,” the men of the citadel are naughtily taught to discriminate against women and homosexuals. The men see women as unequal subjects and believe that they should never be granted the opportunity to attend The Citadel. Similarly, homosexuality is looked upon as being abnormal and wrong and anyone who is homosexual is not considered a “real man.” Likewise, in Beth Loffreda’s “Losing Matt Shepard,” the gay men and women are fiercely ostracized. Group mentality plays a huge role in the reason why different groups of people are discriminated against. Large groups have the ability to influence and persuade people into mimicking the way the group thinks and acts. Some individuals oppress their opinions to fit in with a group while others simply abandon their old opinions and adopt new ones as a result of being heavily influenced. Either way, gender discrimination occurs. When one joins a group one understands that he or she has to conform to the group in order to be accepted. The need to be accepted causes one to either oppress one’s opinions or change them altogether. However, when one chooses to oppress his or her opinions, eventually one will act out against the group.…
