Growing Up In Cuba
Growing up in Cuba was the best experience I could ever ask for, it gave me the capability to appreciate the value of the opportunities. I feel grateful every day for living in the United States of America.
I was born in 1993, in a small town located in the center of the island of Cuba. Since I started elementary school my parents discovered my special skills for the music. Therefore, when I was 8 years old my life changed drastically. I started to study music in the school of arts of the province of Villa Clara. My specialty was piano, a very difficult instrument that requires several hours of study and dedication. During nine years of my life I thought I was going to be a musician, but when I turned 17, I started to think how my future would look like. All of the hours I had to spend daily sited in front of that piano, playing several musical works of different styles, was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was deprived of family trips and free time to play with my friends because I always had to study piano. I did not see myself as a future musician, I wanted to do something different. At that point of my life I felt it was time to make a change, and that was

My love for Art and having been an Art student having to producing intricate pieces of work over long periods of time has trained me to focus, have a good eye for detail and a steady hand to carry out precision work giving me excellent practical skills and manual dexterity. As well as that, the early exposure and experience in a range of settings such as, at the Dental hospital, in the community, at outreach clinics and hospital placements is what further intrigued me about the course. Another reason why I'm interested in a dentistry degree is that it’s a broad field that is ever growing, with constant advancements in treatment and patient care which provides opportunities for further studying and specialization, into areas such oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics and paediatric…

Growing up in Brazil was quite different from the life I came to know in the USA. All I knew was the sunny, uplifting, and sometimes careless spirit of the people around me. Growing up in the capital of Brazil and the youngest of four boys felt like destine was traced for me, I was going to work for the federal government just like my father and later my siblings. However, during my last semester in school I noticed there was more to do and places to visit around the world, than the pleasant thought of working at a stable job in the government. Then, I decided that I should explore other things before settling down.…

My ambition for pursuing dentistry is driven by an instinct to want to help people and society in general to have a better life and to improve their wellbeing. Having good oral health has life changing benefits, from having greater self confidence and a more positive mindset to more obvious benefits such as improved visual appearance, it is my goal to be able to improve and change people’s lives through their oral health on a daily basis, which I believe would be achieved through studying dentistry. I wanted to be in a profession that involves finding practical solutions and also interacting with people as these are two things I enjoy and the role of a dentist fulfils both. The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…

It was hard feeling like something was holding me back. I have been lucky enough to travel through all my life, I had stayed long periods of time away from my family, I was one of the most academically successful students in my school, and I could speak English a lot better than almost anyone I knew back home. So why was I not leaving when my parents were also giving me options to do so? I just wasn’t sure about which path I should take in order to achieve my dreams. Most people I know would go to universities to figure out what they wanted to do in life and I knew exactly what I wanted. But I thought that it’s impossible to teach someone how to be a successful artist. As I felt this way, I was second guessing myself on whether or not it was worth the trouble to study for years abroad and still have to find a way to launch my career. “Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do!”, I exclaimed to my piano teacher at the age of seven. Since then, I knew that piano would become a significant part of my life. Outside of my activities in health sciences, piano takes a major part of my time. When I came to the United States at the age of eight from Egypt, I was not ready to give up such a huge part of me. I began joining music camps and courses such as S.O.A.R, where I met my future piano teacher, Mrs. Jane. She inspired me to continue playing the piano under the Suzuki methodology and instilled in me a love for music. This caused me to beg my mom for lessons from Mrs. Jane. My younger brother and sister saw my love for music, and decided to play the piano as well.…

It was only my mother, my little brother, and me. We did not know the language or the culture, and it was really difficult for us to accommodate to our new life. When I started school I saw many differences in the educational methods, as well as in the life style. By the time I was on high school I had grown bigger aspirations for my life, now I wanted to be the first person on my family to go to college. As of now I have completed my first goal of entering college. It has been a long ride since the day I first got to America, but since then the culture does not stop surprising me. I learn new things everyday like how people accomplish their dreams by working hard, or how people from everywhere come here following their own paths. Those accomplishments were not possible in my country of origin, and if I had not emigrated, I can not imagine what my future or even my present would be in Cuba. I have many things to thank America, but the most important one is that the culture has helped me to mold the person I am today, and thanks to the opportunities that this country gives to it’s residents I am now helping make my future, and my family’s, brighter and better.…
