Gummy Bear Lab Report
The purpose of this lab was to observe osmosis in the Gummy Bears and to investigate the movement of water in and out of a Gummy Bear. The hypothesis stated that the salt will make the gummy bear weigh more, but it will keep the gummy bear more intact. However, the results showed that the gummy bear decreased in mass because of the salt and water. This contradicts the hypothesis because of how it was believed that the gummy bear would increase in weight, but it did the exact opposite. One part of the hypothesis was correct though because the gummy bears were whole and were not broken or damaged. Introduction Will the salt water help the gummy bear stay more intact or will it make the gummy bear weigh more and make is more fragile and breakable? The objective of this lab was to determine if the salt will make the gummy bear stay intact and to observe the movement of water in and out of the gummy bears. This lab helped determine if more salt made the gummy bear more compact. During this lab, we will utilize the materials to determine the movement of water in gummy bears when put in distilled water and the movement of osmosis. Osmosis is the spontaneous movement of solvent particles through a semi-permeable membrane into a space of higher solute concentration, in the course that tends to match the solute concentrations on the two sides. It is a type of passive transport which means that selective molecules can move through a membrane while others cannot move through a membrane. However, active transport is when energy is required in order to transport molecules from low concentration to high concentration. Gummy bears are made of a mixture of sugar, glucose, syrup, starch, flavoring, food coloring, citric acid, and gelatin.     1. The Respiratory exchange ratio is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide produced and oxygen consumed. The 200w stage had a carbon dioxide volume of 7.91L/min and a oxygen consumed volume of 6.51L/min.
