Does the lack of restrictions on being able to obtain a gun help or hurt a society? I believe that guns should be used as a last resort. The amount of deaths caused by gun control abuse is sickening. This topic intrigues me most because nonviolent resolutions to gun involved crimes opposed to problems caused by guns is more desirable to the people in today’s society. Gun control has been a reoccurring issue with people all over. Earlier this year, President Obama proposed a strategy to decrease gun violence in America. This increases the limitations based on background checks. Although this makes it harder to get a gun, it is not fully effective in preventing intentional violence as of right now. It is not trying to eliminate guns and the use of guns altogether, but rather put more restrictions and qualifications on buying one to ensure a feeling of safety among citizens. The non-supporters of gun control believe that it is their right as a citizen to own a gun. This belief was shaped by the Second Amendment that states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed.” (Bill of Rights). While this holds as a valid argument, there is no excuse for inappropriate gun violence. The idea of gun control sparked in 1934, when the first major federal gun law was established and restricted the sale and ownership (“Gun Control”). Many laws have been created over time addressing this as a problem. A total of eleven laws, acts and proposals have been made in accordance with supporting gun control from 1934 to 2013. The most recent one is President Barack Obama’s proposal to tighten gun laws. His idea sparked in response to the mass shootings that occurred during his presidency, including the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in Connecticut and the shooting at a movie theatre in Colorado in which twelve people were killed. The tightened gun laws would include universal background checks for gun sales, the reinstatement and strengthening of the assault weapons ban, and limiting ammunition magazines to a 10-round capacity (“Gun Control”). This act could probably lessen the amount of meaningless deaths drastically throughout the United States. More and more laws will be made until the goal of a safe environment for everyone is met. Despite the fact that these laws have helped out a lot with the issue, there is still more that can be done about
