When I thought of social work, my thoughts automatically went to the Department of Youth and Family Services or Licensed Clinical Social Workers as these are the familiar aspects in my community. I had no idea that almost every profession has a place as well as a need for a social worker. The field is growing every year, and there are more jobs available than social workers to fill those roles, which makes this an opportune time to pursue a degree in this field. Social work practice is very different than I had envisioned, however it is even more interesting than I would have ever thought. As my field placement is working with the geriatric population which I thought I would not like in any way, I have now discovered that this area is a very gratifying place to be as a social worker. There are so many ways to have a positive impact on the elderly people, as so many are lost and forgotten by everyone they know and love. It is such a hard thing to see, so I have been spending every day at my internship trying to make these people feel loved and appreciated and that they have someone who sincerely cares. After my placement ends, I will still be a constant at the nursing home as I have cultivated many strong relationships

From its roots, social work has always remained committed to its core value of empowering people faced with life challenges. In 1915, Flexner made a profound statement that social work lacked a research base to be identified as a unique profession, as it primarily implements knowledge from other professions (as cited in Cnaan & Dichter, 2008, p. 279). According to Greene (2001), social theorists have been trying to conceptualize a scientific framework that can be directly applied to social work practice. Research by Gitterman and Knight (2013) suggests that social workers must embrace research based methods in order to guide their practice. While research should be a framework that social work practice is based on, Greene (2001) identifies that it is important to combine empirical findings with a “reflective approach”, which accounts for the quality of the relationship that the client develops with the therapist. Social workers should adopt an evidence-guided practice approach as it helps rely on a scientific knowledge base, without letting our core value of empowering clients be affected.…

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Assisting in a vast array of societal facets, social workers rely on theories and frameworks to pilot…

Due to the course Introduction to Liberal Arts, I was able to gain a multitude of scholarly attributes that overall contributed to my ability to understand the assigned passage in a critical manner and to construct my paper. The integrated studies course that I have been apart of for the last semester is very much essential to what I believe a liberal arts education should be and that is clearly also the case of the Monmouth College Faculty as well. The class is essential to mine and my fellow students’ developing intellect. Within my individual Introduction to Liberal Arts class, we focused on three main readings: Curious, Eating Animals, and Persepolis. We also addressed the three required articles: Master of Many Trades, Interest as the Missing Motivator in Self-Regulation, and “Only Connect…”. These together allowed myself and my class to be engulfed in the initial liberal arts experience.…

In this task I will be reflecting upon an incident undertaken on area of my work. The model of reflection I’ve chosen is Gibbs (1988), which involves reflection on the description, feelings, evaluation, conclusion and action plan (Gibbs 1988). The Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle is fairly straightforward and encourages a clear description of the situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, analysis to make sense of the experience, conclusion where other options are considered and reflection upon experience to examine what you would do if the situation arose again. The procedure in which I will be reflecting upon is Last offices; I chose this due to how constructive and valuable it was in my personal and professional development as a student practitioner nurse.…
