Many people say that taking care of yourself is selfish and is a waste of time. However, taking time to renew yourself makes you have a clear head which can help you think of ways to solve any problems or situations easier and faster.
In the book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" there's an example that talks about a man who had lasted hours trying to saw down a tree with a saw that wasn't sharpened. A man who walked past him suggested that he should
take time to sharpen the saw. The man took offense and thought that sharpening the saw would be a waste of time. All the man had to do was take a little time to sharpen the saw so he could get back to cutting down the tree with less struggle and in a much faster time.
In the book "Things Fall Apart" the main character had a hard life and it was all due to the fact that he wouldn't take time to renew himself. Okonkwo struggle to make a living and had a tragic ending. Okonkwo rarely thought things through, he always acted on impulse. When the white men start transforming his people into a new religion Okonkwo was furious. Since Okonkwo had been beaten by the white men he hung himself. If Okonkwo had taken time to think and to renew himself he would have probably come up with a better solution to the problem. Since Okonkwo never renew himself it held him back from solving the issue with the white men easier and faster. If Okonkwo had relieved his stress by taking care of himself he could have settled an agreement with the white men.
Taking a little time for yourself doesn't make you selfish it makes you a smart thinker. If we all took the time to renew ourselves it would give us a clear head to think of ways to make life easier. In situations where we feel like there is no hope you have to take time to "Sharpen the Saw" it makes you solve (cut) situations (tree) easier in a shorter time in order to get to more important things like having fun or spending time with friends.
