In an article written by Diane Dew, titled The Trouble Teens Face, It was stated that in recent years the media has been flooded with articles about the problems teens face. These problems range from drugs and violence, to pregnancy and abortion. I want discuss abortion because it is such an important issue for my generation. Since the 19th century English common law forbade abortion. Abortion prior to quickening was a misdemeanor and then a felony. In 1967 the first two states to make abortion legal was Colorado and California. By June 1970 New York passed its first abortion on demand law with a 24 week limit. It was the 16th state to allow abortion when the other states were still very restrictive. They only allowed abortions for pregnancies involving rape, incest, life of the mother or fetal handicap.
My generation seems to take the easy way out because there are so many young girls that get pregnant and then choose to have an abortion rather than take responsibility for their actions. However, they soon realize that shameful way out can be …show more content…
quite painful and more risky than giving birth. Younger women that carry their baby to term have better births then older women if they get the proper care. I don’t think these girls are aware of the dangers this can put on their body, mind, and spirit. Current data shows that one in four of my generation is not living because they were taken away by abortions.
Abortions have affected many different people in countless ways.
I’m pretty sure that most people know someone that has had an abortion. One in every six women had an abortion and it has different effects on them. Many women that have abortions show signs of major psychological problem such as depression, bladder injuries that can lead to peritonitis an inflamed infected lining of the stomach, bowel injury or breast cancer. Women who have abortions have higher chances of getting breast cancer later in life and this has increased by 50%. Ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus. After an abortion you are 8-20 times likely to have one of the effects on other pregnancies like bleeding in the first few months, and less likely to have a regular delivery. A woman who has had an abortion will be 3 times more likely to die in the first few months of giving birth to another
baby.
Therefore, it is important that young women learn about abstinence, birth control, and condoms. This is a job for everyone. It can be taught by government officials, and parents. If a young girl is already pregnant it is important that they learn about all options not just abortion. Young girls need to know that putting their child up for adoption is ok. There are plenty of families that can’t have children and can provide a loving environment for an adopted child. Furthermore, young girls should be made aware of the free clinics that provide birth -control and condoms for free. Problems will continue to plague teenagers and abortion will continue to be one of the leading problems. However, if young girls are educated about the many options that are available they will be better equip to make decisions about having an abortion or not having an abortion.
