HALLOWEEN

What is Halloween?
Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows (or All Saints).
Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (also known as "guising"), attending costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.
What is the origin of Halloween?
History
According to many scholars, it was originally influenced by western European harvest festivals and festivals of the dead with possible pagan roots, particularly the Celtic Samhain. Others maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has Christian roots.
Celtic influences
Though the origin of the word Halloween is Christian, the holiday is commonly thought to have pagan roots. Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain", which comes from the Old Irish for "summer's end". Samhain (pronounced sah-win or sow-in) was the first and most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Gaelic (Irish, Scottish and Manx) calendar. It was held on or about October 31 – November 1 and kindred festivals were held at the same time of year in other Celtic lands; for example the Brythonic Calan Gaeaf (in Wales), Kalan Gwav (in Cornwall) and Kalan Goañv (in Brittany). Samhain is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and many important events in Irish mythology happen or begin on Samhain. It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the 'darker half' of the year.

Which holiday celebrates harvest around a bonfire, monster carved pumpkins, candy sales that soar to the millions, and costumes that are as unpredictable as the weather? Halloween, of course! Halloween is the second most successful holiday behind Christmas and I don’t have enough paper to explain all of the reasons. Halloween comes in many colors but the ones we always associate it with are orange and black – orange represents the fall harvest and black represents darkness and death (creepy!). Seemingly, the two are twisted into one interestingly spooky season.…

The Origins of this day (Day of the Dead) aren’t exact, but are approximated from pre-Columbian times. The tradition of celebrating the dead had been observed for over 3000 years. The ritual of death was celebrated through skulls, and in pre-Columbian time’s enemy tribes skulls were used to act as a symbol for death and second life, a lot like reincarnation. The date became recorded when the Day of the dead was celebrated in the Aztec calendar, and lasted for a month. The old form of the Day of the dead revolved around Mictecaíhuatl, Goddess of Dead and the Underworld or Mictlán in the Aztec world. The Goddess was not evil or demon like, instead she was in charge of taking care of the souls and providing them with comfort. Because of the thought of comfort after death people became to accept it and that’s why it became known.…

The Celts or Celtics created Halloween and their tradition spread throughout all of Europe. October 31 marked the end of their harvesting season and their Celting new year. October 31st was also thought of a time between years where the souls of the dead walked the earth. After the people lit huge bonfires to drive the dead away from the living. The Catholics frowned upon what was happening so the Vatican merged it with a church sanctioned holiday and it became All Saints Day. All Saints Day was also known as Hallowmas where Hallow meant holy or saintly and mass meant mass of the saints. The night before was known as All Hallows Eve, which gradually became known as Halloween. The people from Ireland came to America and with them came their traditions. On Halloween children wore masks and played tricks on people in their neighborhood. Gradually playing tricks got out of hand and turned into outright vandalism. Back in the 1930’s if you did not give children candy they would trash your house that is where we got the phrase “Trick or Treat”.…

The Celtic religion had an oral religious culture according to the reports from the Romans and Julius Caesar. They had a number of rituals for the festivals associated with seasons. Their rituals were divided into five parts; rituals performed at seasonal feasts, transmigration rituals such as initiation rites, divinatory rituals, curative processes, and magical rituals. Firstly, rituals performed at seasonal feasts occurred with the Irish’s feasts and were celebrated throughout the year. These feasts included: Samhain (1st of November), Imbolc (1st of February), Beltane (1st of May) and Lughnasadh (1st of August). For example, Lughnasadh is celebrated on the 1st of August, marking the beginning of the harvest season approximately halfway between…
