Compare/Contrast Halloween and Prom Which holiday celebrates harvest around a bonfire, monster carved pumpkins, candy sales that soar to the millions, and costumes that are as unpredictable as the weather? Halloween, of course! Halloween is the second most successful holiday behind Christmas and I don’t have enough paper to explain all of the reasons. Halloween comes in many colors but the ones we always associate it with are orange and black – orange represents the fall harvest and black represents darkness and death (creepy!). Seemingly, the two are twisted into one interestingly spooky season. We celebrate Halloween on October 31st and the ghoulishly exciting night begins with the first twinkling of the full moon and the overly-sized, perfectly decorated bag ready to be filled with the most delicious treats. What may even be more impressive are the characters clutching the goody bags – perhaps a cute rosy-cheeked angel with feathery wings, a crazy clown whose face is covered with heavy colorful makeup, or a scary creature hiding behind a crumbling mask created with latex? Whoever it is, I am reminded of why the October 31st tradition isn’t as strange as it once was. Modern Halloween has become less literal about ghosts and ghouls and more about costumes and candy. The holiday is overflowing with action on its reserved night. Kids are so anxious to drag their parents out the door, show off their creative costumes, and ring their first doorbell for a fun-filled night of trick-or-treating as soon as the dismissal bell for school rings. High school students wait until the whole group of friends is together before they head out into the misty darkness with only the flickering street light to guide them. Meanwhile, adults are sipping on their witches brew at a local party or nightclub. Let’s not forget about the numerous
