When it was built in 1837, it was considered to be one of the grandest mansions in the town. Originally a small house, it was later transformed into a magnificent mansion in a mixture of Gothic, Antebellum and Victorian style. After his first wife died, Matthias Ham, the owner of the house, married another woman. He lived comfortably in the mansion.
Mathias Ham was an energetic personality who succeeded in his many businesses such a lumber, shipping, agriculture and lead mining. There is an interesting story involving Ham and a few pirates. While walking through different parts of the mansion, they felt ill at ease in certain locations. On the third floor, they experienced sudden icy gusts of wind and a chilly feeling envelop many people gathered in the area. John was the fearless type and he had no qualms about staying in the dark. Almost soon after stepping into the house, John felt the strong presence of something. At about 3 AM, the entities in the house made themselves visible to John. John was fully awake when he heard the voices of women in the yard outside the window.
