Harassment or a Misunderstanding:
The case of Amanda Stein In the article, Harassment or a Misunderstanding: the case of Amanda Stein, Amanda Stein, leads technical support engineer was facing continuous harassment by her manager Frank Villa. I believe Frank Villa's attitude towards Amanda Stein was unacceptable because she was being unfairly treated by the fact that she is a woman, and moreover, by the fact that she is Jew. In today's society, the issue of harassment in the work place is a very sensitive topic. There are many ways to harass people even though, the harasser do not realize it. For instance, our book list a few items, which are, consider harassment when directed to a person, "dirty jokes, vulgar slang, nude pictures, swearing, and personal ridicule and insult." (Bohlander 65) even though, Mr. Villa probably did not meant his comments in a malicious way, as stated in the book making a person feel ridiculous its consider harassment in the work place as well. One of the issues faced by Amanda Stein, in this article, is the fact that Amanda is a woman. For instance, Mr. Villa's comments towards Amanda being a woman, was harassment, Mr. Villa unacceptable comments such as "I think you have been successful in part due to your ability to take it and give it right back. Most women would have shriveled up around here but you haven't." (Page 30) this type of comment was out of place in this situation. As a result, comments like that could of caused Amanda from effectively performing her job; moreover, it could of underestimated her dignity, as a result make her feel like an outsider. Secondly, Mr. Villa's constantly comments referring to the fact that Amanda is a Jew, in my opinion, its a hostile situation, and should not be tolerated. I believe that in a work place, an employee's wok performance can be less effective due to comments related to his/her religious beliefs. Moreover, Mr. Villa's unnecessary comments towards Amanda, were unethical

The first employee she talked with was Heather. The main issue over here is mostly stereotypical and racial discrimination. Heather told she doesn’t like retreats. She also said that she was ignored to give a promotion six months ago by her supervisor Jack as she was Chinese, and that her supervisor doesn’t like foreigners. She also stated that the three day retreat held once a year won’t solve the anti-social atmosphere between the employees. This problem occurred because Heather was upset with Jack for the reason she was not promoted by him. Categorization is an OB concept which falls under stereotyping. This is a comparison process for social identity, and that comparison begins by categorizing people into different groups. Heather thought she was categorized by her supervisor Jack as she was from China. Homogenization is another OB concept that falls under stereotyping. It is a simplified process of comparing people in various groups. Here people tends to think that, people with in a group are very much similar to each other despite the fact that everyone is an individual and have their own different characteristics. Heather thought that jack was homogenization towards her as she belonged from China, and was from some kind of Chinese group. Heather also thought that Jack was discriminating towards her as she was a foreigner, and so didn’t give her a promotion. There were also internal attribution factors in Heather as she regularly took large numbers of sick days from work, for the reason she thought her supervisor was discriminating her. She also had fundamental attribution error. Fundamental attribution error is a bias, refers to our tendency to see…

DeMur found very clear issues that can relate to Harassment and Equal Employment Opportunity discrimination within his work place. It started when his supervisor was hesitant to grant him days off for a religious event. This event was something that the supervisor did not know and did not understand why DeMur would want to join this religion. Jenkins, who is DeMur’s supervisor, said that he was a religious person and called his a “so called religion.” After a period of time, he was granted his time off for his religious pilgrimage. His fellow colleagues would taunt him about his religious beliefs by calling it “witchcraft and sorcery.” Even though DeMur was taking the abuse he did not say anything about it. The supervisor was aware of the situation and was allowing it to happen. After his religious encounter, DeMur came back to work and was given a new name, Maalick. This was the spiritual name that he was given to from his spiritual retreat and he wanted to be known by Maalick only. On his first day, he went to the Human Resources department to legally change his name. After he came back to his office, his co-workers had decorated with African tribal pictures and voodoo, mocking what Maalick now believes in.…

The people of the world today argue about discrimination all the time, and is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different gender, religions, preferences in partners , and different economic qualities. However, all of these words are example of discrimination, but in opinion color of skin is one of the huge problem. In the workplace there is a great deal of evidence that shows racial and gender discrimination still are apart of American workplace. I believe that our company stands to lose a lot as a result of a successful suit against us by Ms. Pollard. We have reason to believe that if these actions are taken to court, we will find it difficult to deny the allegations and defend ourselves in the lawsuit. Harassment is defined as a punishable offense, and is inappropriate and illegal for company workers, both management and the labor force, to participate in any behavior which is deemed harassing, threatening, demeaning or uncomfortable by the person who is claiming harassment. According to the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA), and the evidence presented by Ms. Pollard, our workers and management have clearly participated in violations of those orders. A simple defense on our part is to claim that there was no hostile work environment created, and that these incidents were few and far between, however, according to the law petty slights, annoyances and isolated incidents will not rise to the level of illegality, but I believe the amount of abuse that Ms. Pollard has taken, and can prove against us, is clearly enough to reasonably see how she can claim a hostile work environment. The fact that Ms. Pollard may have been 'easy' with some of the other gentlemen or inviting in some other ways does not mean that she has no case. She has voiced her disapproval of her treatment on many occasions and has made…

Every year women across the world seek counsel from Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) due to unwanted sexual advances, hostile work environment, lack of management training, neglecting to respond to employee complaints, and sex discrimination. In certain corporations such as prisons and farm houses women are seen as prey to men. Female workers have decided to not endure the harassment, unwanted advances, to be ignored by management, and not be judged or taken advantage of because of their sex. I was motivated by the two articles to bring awareness of sexual harassment by men that are in management positions and take advantage of their roles in the workplace.…

Unfortunately in our society, we have been gradually increasing sexual liberties in the ways we dress, talk, and act in any and every public venue. This sexual liberation from both genders has helped to blur the boundaries of sexual harassment. Balswick and Balswick define sexual harassment as “any form of unsolicited language or touching containing sexual overtones. It includes sexual jokes, suggestive talk and unsolicited physical advances (Balswick and Balswick, 2008).” Based on that definition and what I know of many work places, especially hospitals, outsiders could perceive that sexual harassment is alive and well on any given day. Though many of those sharing sexual jokes and innuendos would adamantly deny that they were harassing anyone, they could not deny that they shared unsolicited material. They chose to verbally pass along what they found to be funny from their experiences or mind, while simultaneously failing to consider how the information may be received and perceived by those listening. Generally, those that object are thought to be sensitive people and are excluded from future exposure. Most institutions and work places today have established grievance policies for anyone that perceives they are experiencing sexual harassment.…
