She strongly believed that slavery would soon be abolished, due to the outbreak of the war. (GHI). During the war, she helped by “doing whatever she could to help with the war and to help the fugitive slaves that arrived at Union army camps, cooking meals and nursing soldiers and fugitives alike” (GHI). Tubman became a spy for Colonel Montgomery during 1863. She successfully put together a network of spies which consisted of slaves who wanted to escape and work for the Union army (GHI). Additionally she worked as a scout for Colonel Montgomery (GHI). This led to 500 slaves achieving the freedom they desired (GHI). During the end of the war, Harriet returned to Auburn. She became a community activist and an active member of the suffrage movement (GHI). Additionally, she helped shelter the poverty stricken and the elderly on the farm in Auburn. Even though she struggled financially (GHI). As you can see, Harriet Tubman was a woman that represents true bravery and compassion. She devoted her life to helping hundreds of people escape from slavery and achieve the freedom they deserved. Additionally, she played a vital role in assisting the Union army in the civil war.
