Hasteful Decision-Making In Romeo And Juliet
Decisions are often made without proper thought when people are under pressure. In William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, readers are able to see the tragic outcome of hasteful decision making in different situations by multiple characters. Haste is a major factor in Tybalt’s death, a murderous demonstration by Romeo that leads to tension between the families involved. Tybalt’s intent is not murder, but on the other hand, Romeo’s is, and carries it out his decision hastily without thinking of the consequences. In addition, Juliet’s plan to poison herself and fake her death is one that is thought out with naivety in order to avoid her arranged marriage to Paris. Furthermore, Romeo’s suicide is an action driven by carelessness as he doesn't look for insight from the Friar or any other individual that may help. Haste is an overlying theme in the play as it affects the plot development by manipulating the actions of the characters and situations, thus resulting in a tragic ending. Romeo’s decision to avenge Mercutio is one that is shaped by haste, leading to tension between the Montague and Capulet families. For instance, an enraged Tybalt’s bold decision to argue stubbornly with Romeo leads to a fatal sword fight between himself and Mercutio. Mercutio challenges Tybalt saying,“O calm dishonourable, vile submission![...]Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?[...}Make haste, lest …show more content…
It is is a fundamental reason for Tybalt's downfall; caused by a series of poorly made decisions, Juliet's course of action to fake her death; based on naivety and escaping the arranged marriage, and Romeo's suicide; driven by rush and tactlessness. While there may be conditions that put one under stress to act quickly, it is ultimately one's cognizance and care that keep up a distance from long term

On the late summer afternoon, the young Montague bachelors and Mercutio were wandering when they were interrupted with the merciless Tybalt and his gang. According to witnesses, the young Mercutio made spiteful remarks to Tybalt. His audacity then provoked another habitual dispute between the two houses. While they were crossing-swords, Romeo allegedly joined them in an apparent ecstatic mood. When Tybalt distinguished the teen, he notoriously insulted him, attempting to enrage him. Surprisingly Romeo was not provoked and did not raise his sword or even bite his thumb at the king of cats. On the contrary he simply attempted to made amends with spiteful Tybalt. At this ludicrous scene, Mercutio and all the other Motagues were absolutely horrified.…

The play “Romeo and Juliet” is a devastating love story. In only a matter of few days, to be precise 5 days, unfortunate events unfold. The feud between the Capulets and Montagues, one that no-one knows or what started the feud, caused violence and hatred among the citizens of Verona. Nonetheless, there are people whose actions help lead to the tragic fate of the star-cross lovers and other unnecessary people. People who don’t think twice of their actions until after the consequences. Maybe, just an inference, if they just thought about their actions, the play may have had a different ending.…

In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are victims of free will because their decisions lead to their ultimate death. Several times throughout the play either Romeo or Juliet’s decisions leads them farther and farther apart. Firstly, after Capulet’s ball, Tybalt fights Murcutio and Romeo decides to intervene in the fight. This leads to Tybalt stabbing Murcutio and Romeo taking revenge by killing Tybalt. After this incident, the Prince declares “Let Romeo hence in haste, / Else when he is found, that hour is his last” (3.1.204-205). This incident turns the plot of the whole story because it tears Romeo and Juliet’s dreams apart. On the other hand, after hours of grieving for Romeo, Juliet asks the Friar to clean up her…

Shakespeare is forced to kill off Mercutio "lest he steal the show from the major figures of the plot". His brash attitude draws attention away from the problems of Romeo and Juliet. When Tybalt seeks Romeo in a public street, Mercutio challenges him to "couple [his words] with something" and "make it a word and a blow". His recklessness and quick response for something so dangerous is a demonstration of his preferences. However, as a kind of side effect, his preferences tend to pull the spotlight away from the main characters. Mercutio duels Tybalt when the swordplay is meant for Romeo.…

These deaths that occur appear in, and greatly impact, both the Montague and Capulet families. When Romeo first appears at the Capulet party, Tybalt instantaneously notices him, and becomes quite angry. Tybalt runs to Lord Capulet, to see he can be granted to permission to remove of Romeo. Lord Capulet responds surprisingly well to the news of Romeo arriving at the party. “Content thee gentle coz. Let him alone.” States Capulet in act 1 scene 5. However, Tybalt has a different opinion on what should happen to Romeo. Because of Tybalt’s differing opinion, he later, in act 3 scene 1, finds Romeo and proceeds to throw insults around. Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, becomes angry at Tybalt for insulting his best friend, and decides to fight with Tybalt. Romeo disagrees with this decision and tries to break up the fight. Mercutio ends up being stabbed by Tybalt, and then out of anger Romeo kills Tybalt. Because all of these characters had differing opinions, lives were lost, leaving long lasting effects on both…

Romeo's extreme hastiness is what leads to his early death. One example is the agreement to marry Juliet on the night they met. Romeo did not think thoroughly about the idea and how it is going to affect both of their opposing families (Montague and Capulet). When he announced his decision to the Friar, the Friar immediately insists Romeo to take things slowly. “Wisely and slowly: those who run, trip” (Act 2 scene 3 pg.105) But Romeo is too blinded by love. He ignores the advice and wants to marry Juliet. It seems that Romeo thinks that the world is quickly moving out of his reach so he has to make quick, impulsive decisions without thinking about how it might affect him and the ones who he loves. If he had consulted Friar before he bought the poison and went to go see Juliet, it could have cost him his life and Juliet’s. Juliet is also to blame. She being a very respectful girl does a complete 180 change to someone very hasty and rebellious. Instead of telling the truth to her parents, about her already being married to Romeo, she goes to extreme measures and is willing to kill herself, “ ….in spite of you wisdom, you can offer no help, just say my intention is sensible and I’ll implement it straight away with this knife…” She is just thinking about herself, and does not care about what could happen if she doesn’t get her way, so she begs the Friar for a vial of “poison”, not thinking that the plan might go…
