Hatchet Character Analysis

The novel “Hatchet” is a piece of literature that is very descriptive about the trials and tribulations Brian walks through when the plane crashes and he is left alone. This novel talks about how Brian’s character evolves over the course of the novel from being an overwhelmed child to a self-reliant young adult. He mentally became stronger but also noticed his physical features changing. He learns adapt to the environment and to fight Mother Nature, to survive in the wilderness.
At the beginning of the novel, the best word to describe Brian’s personality or character is panicked. When the pilot of the plane has a heart attack and dies, Brian experiences “a terror so intense that his breathing, his thinking, and nearly his heart had stopped”
The best word to describe his personality or character during his rising action is determined. This word is an effective description because after one of his lowest points, where he wanted to end it all, he says, “And the other one was that he would not die, he would not let death in again.” (Passage E). When he was at the lowest point in his life he decided to end it all, but when he woke up in the morning he was so angry. He was angry that he let his mind go there, that he even contemplated killing himself. After this he showed a determination. He was determined that he was going to make it out alive and that he was not going to let death back into his thoughts. He then began telling himself that he had to do something different. He knew he needed to quickly rebuild the fire, eat and get hydrated. He knew if he didn’t start to do something quickly, everything he worked himself up for, would be for nothing. After Brian was run over by the tornado and a moose, the text states, “Come on, he thought, baring his teeth in the darkness-come on. Is that the best you can do? Is that all you can hit me with-a moose and a tornado?” (Passage F). Brian was run over by a tornado and a moose. He is already in the wilderness and just beginning to provide for himself when everything got whipped away: his shelter, his food, his fire, everything.
