Although many people believe that Romeo and Juliet is about love, a more major theme of the play is hatred, hostility and violence. Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most popular play, an important theme to the story is the hatred, hostility and violence within the story. The aspects of the feuding families, the swordfights in Verona as well as the ongoing antagonistic views towards enemy families are evidence to these themes.

The family feud made an impact throughout the family branches ranging from servants to distant cousins due to the hatred of their family’s enemies. “I pray thee good Mercutio, Let’s retire. The day is hot, the Capulet’s abroad; and if we meet we shall not ‘scape brawl” (Quote from Benvolio, Act 3 scene 1) Benvolio implies a warning to Mercutio and Romeo that if they meet a member of the Capulet family they would be forced to duel. This quote presents the ideas of mass amount of violence between the Capulets and the Montagues. This hatred is stated shown again by the servants of the Capulets. “I will bite my thumb, which is a disgrace to them if they bear it.” (Quote from the Capulet servants, Act 1, Scene 1). During the commencing scene of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, the Capulet servants provoke the Montague servants by biting their thumbs.
