Block 4 Have you ever read the book Anthem by Ayn Rand? It’s about a man, Equality 7-2521, that is writing a journal in an underground tunnel he found. That was not allowed in the place he was living at. They had very strict rules to live by, and were told how to live. Freedom of speech, and freedom of the press is the most important to adopt for their society.
Freedom of speech is the right to express your ideas and opinions when you’re speaking. Equality 7-2521 was a very intelligent man. He was the smartest in his class, also known as Home of Students. Home of Students is a boarding school where he lives. He was full of ideas which he wasn’t allowed to express. Everybody had to be the same; nobody
could be smart or have ideas. They had to live by what the government told them to do. By the Council of Vocations you were told what job you were going to go until you die. Your opinion didn’t matter to them.
Freedom of the press is to express ideas and opinions when you’re writing. In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 was writing about everything from his feelings and thoughts to how he lived. At school nobody was allowed to be creative in any shape or form. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press both represent ideas and opinions but are physically different. Freedom of speech involves talking, and freedom of the press involves writing. It’s very good to express any thought or feelings you have. You shouldn’t feel like you’re going to jail if you do express. In Anthem they were scared of the government, so nobody would try anything. They would get sent to the Palace of Corrective Detention if they did. Any idea can help come up with something brilliant. It makes you different and creative to express. Many people now express how they feel through art, and you can tell a lot about someone through that. In Anthem they were scared to be different because they would get thrown in jail. If freedom of speech, and the freedom of the press was adapted to their society it would be very good. It’s boring to be the same as everybody. Being different than everybody else defines who you are, and being the same makes you a boring person.
