This Day In History 1
Have you ever wondered how or when the first tanks were built?
In September 1915, the first prototype tank built was named Little Willy. Weighing 14 tons and only moving 2 mph, Little Willy was far from a success. The idea came from a British colonel named Ernest Swinton. Swinton’s idea was to create an armored vehicle that would tear through enemy lines and destroy their troops. The performance of Little Willy was not so great. It was slow and overheated way too much. But the second prototype named Big Willy produced in 1916, was much more advanced and ready to be driven into the battlefield. The abilities of the tank were that it had a top speed of 4mph, turn sharply, climb a 5 foot hill, and have the ability to cross an eight foot gap. There would be 10 men in the tanks with two men holding heavy machine guns and two light artillery guns. The first battle Big Willy was placed into was The Battle Of Cambria in November 1917. With only a few mechanical malfunctions, Big Willy captured over 8,000 enemy troops and over 100 …show more content…
The French had produced the most armored vehicles than any other combatants combined in World War 1. The Germans on the other hand began building tanks only because of seeing enemies with these armored vehicles. With all of the other countries building over 1,000s of tanks, Germany only built around 20 tanks in World War 1. All together there was about 7,000 tanks built, not all put into battle because some were prototypes.
Numerous concepts of armored all-terrain vehicles had been imagined for a long time. With tons of work, effort, and many more we can thank those who created or designed tanks. Tanks have affected our economy greatly. Without tanks warfare would be much more difficult and probably not as successful. Tanks starting from Little Willy and ending with modern outstanding tanks, I realize how much of an impact they had on
