Contact sports can cause lifelong health problems if the head injuries happening aren’t properly treated. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that attacks the spinal cord and progresses in damage over a five year period until the average person loses their life. ALS is caused by repeated head trauma that catches up to the body later on causing it to lose it’s voluntary movements such as movement in the legs, arms, and face. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CTE) is also caused by repeated head trauma usually from sports like football, soccer, and boxing. Athletes make up the majority of the ALS and CTE’s population because of the dangerous sports being played. The sports world is starting to take precautions and making changes to the rules of the sports that cause the most head injuries. Any sport that allows the head to be hit is a risk for a concussion. The difference between a concussion and head trauma is a concussion is caused by head trauma. A concussion has to do with the injury to the brain caused by the head trauma from the impact. Head trauma used to be underrated and thought of as a minor inconvenience, but doctors are beginning to understand how severe the traumas actually are. Repetitive head trauma is always bad, but any severe head trauma can be extremely problematic. When the brain is shook the connections between cells can be discombobulated. Tests like a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or a CAT Scan can be done to diagnose the brain injury. Dizziness and headaches are the main signs of a concussion. A headache after sports trauma is the worst sign. Safer sports rules can avoid concussions and head trauma which will prevent diseases caused by the two
