Discriminatory practice in health and social care happens for many reasons including some important factors that are normally the cause of discriminatory practice for example a person may be discriminated against because on the basis of their diversity. One important discriminatory practice is because of culture. A person’s Culture is important to them and identifies who they are in the world. It is developed within the social group they are raised in, and can change when they are mature enough to decide for their selves what culture best suit them. In addition respecting a person’s culture is important for all concerned. It’s also important for the individual because it creates a sense of support and understanding. An example of Culture discrimination in a health and social care setting is that someone from a certain culture might not be given the same amount of support and advice then someone else from another different culture. This is one regular example of culture discrimination in health and social care.
Another important type of discrimination is Disability discrimination. In health and social care, you will work with and support with various disabilities. The Disability discrimination Act makes illegal to discriminate against someone who has a disability. The act covers employment, access to goods, facilities and services of organisations, education, buying and renting a property and transport services. There has to be full accessibility for anyone with a disability. The organisation anyone works for will be required by law to have a policy in place regarding disability. An example of this type of discrimination in a health and social care is that the organisation might not place the necessary equipment’s for people who a disability to gain access to the health and social care settings.     Discriminatory effects have had a very negative effect on the people that are being cared for. This can make the person who’s being cared for have a low self-esteem and self-identity. It can also make them have negative behaviour such as aggression or criminality, disempowerment which can make a person feel less powerful or confident it can also lead to poor health and marginalisation which is where they treat a person insignificant. Marginalisation is when people feel like they are not part of the society. In a health and social care setting no one should ever be marginalised no matter what background they came from or circumstances, their sexual orientation or their health status. Most people that are discriminated against others which may make them feel disempowered. They can fight against these cases and they can win but at times they will lose the case and if they do they can become depressed and devalued which can lead to more health issues. It also can lead to negative behaviour like aggression or crimes because people are getting discriminated against. When people are discriminated it can knock their self-esteem and it can make them feel worthless and they can end up in depression. In a health and social care professional needs to ensure that the individual’s self-esteem stays maintained if it’s high and if it’s low then to help it be raised and be there to help them cope with their situations. All types of discrimination may lead to a person not using a health and social care provision and this can lead to a poorer health. The discrimination may be by an individual, health organisation or even by the government. Negative behaviour, crime or aggression can be caused by discrimination.
