Task 2 - Know the characteristics of nutrients
Submit – 07/11/14
This task meets P2 and M1. You need to;
A) Use the table below to describe fully the characteristics of Carbohydrates, Protein, Lipids, Vitamins, Minerals and their benefit to the body.
(This meets P2)
B) You should also use the table to discuss the nutritional energy requirements for Young Children and Pregnant women/breastfeeding mothers comparing and contrasting similarities and differences between the two groups for each nutrient and for energy. (You need to show your understanding of the fact that people need different amounts of certain nutrients at each life stage) (This meets M1)
Nutrient
Characteristics (Different types …show more content…
and function in the body)
Dietary Source
Energy Value
Requirements for Young Children
Requirements for Pregnant / breast feeding mothers
Comparison (Reasons for differences or similarities)
CARBOHYDRATES
Provides energy,
Two types: Simple Carbohydrates (sugars),complex carbohydrates (fibre and starch)
Potatoes
Bread
Rice
Pasta
4 calories per gram
Children require carbohydrates in their diet because children are always being kept active by doing sports and clubs and activities with school and carbohydrate provide us with energy.
Pregnant and breast feeding mothers need carbohydrates not only to provide them with energy but to provide the baby with energy so it is healthy.
I think pregnant / breast feeding mothers need slightly more carbohydrates than children as they have to keep their energy levels up but they also have to keep the baby’s energy’s levels up.
PROTEIN
Provides growth and repair
Made up of amino acids
Fish
Meat
Eggs
Poultry
Milk
Pulses
4 calories per gram
Protein is an important nutrient for children as children are constantly growing and they need protein in order to grow properly also children are always having accidents and breaking bones and injuring themselves and protein is also needed for repair.
Protein is needed more for the baby to grow and develop. Also protein is need for the mother to be able to breast feed the baby to fill it with nutrients.
I think both children and pregnant/breast feeding mothers need equal amounts of protein in their diet because they both need it to promote growth, children need it to grow and develop properly but pregnant/breast feeding mothers also need it for the growth of their child. However children a bit more to deal with repairing injured body parts.
LIPIDS
Used for energy, source of vitamins, used for hormones
Cake
Chocolate
Oil
Butter
Sweets
9 calories per gram
Lipids when controlled can provide children with energy and can also be a source of vitamin and are good for hormones when children start to get ready for puberty. However if consumed excessively can lead to rotted teeth, diabetes, obesity.
Lipids are good for pregnant women and breast feeding mothers as it provides them with energy not only for themselves but for the baby but also can be a source of vitamin which can keep the baby and themselves healthy. However it is important not to eat too many lipids as they can lead to blood clots and heart problems also can increase weight gain if eaten excessively.
Children need more lipids than pregnant/breast feeding mothers because they are needed for hormones which children use during puberty.
VITAMINS & MINERIALS
Vitamins- needed in small amounts, two types: fat soluble ,water soluble
Fruit
Vegetables
Beetroot-Contains vitamins A,B1,B2,B6,C.E,K
Broccoli-contains vitamins A,B1,B2,B6,C,E,K
Apple – contains
Vitamins
A,B1,B2,B6,C,E,K
Blueberries - contains vitamins
A,B1,B2,C,E,K
No calories
These are vital for children as they provide them with strength, good for the skin. But only needed in small amounts.
Vitamins and minerals are important for baby’s development as they are completely healthy and promote strength they are also good for the mothers skin and her strength.
But are only needed in small amounts as they can leave quite an impact.
I think both children and pregnant/breast feeding mothers need an equal amount of vitamins and minerals in their diet as the effects can benefit them both and they both need it in their diet to keep healthy.
WATER
Acts as a lubricant for joints, eyes
It helps the body get rid of waste
It helps the body regulate temperature
Water
No calories
Children need to drink plenty of water to keep themselves hydrated because we so easily loose water in our body though natural causes also water keeps the body regulate its temperature.
For pregnant women and breast feeding mums water is vital in their diet as it acts as a lubricant fir eyes and joints. Also it helps the body get rid of waste easier.
It also is healthy for the baby.
I think water is needed in birth children’s and pregnant/breast feeding mums diets as water is needed for hydration also it helps regulate the body’s temperature however the mothers may need to drink more for the baby as well and also to pass waste through their body properly.
