Coursework Unit 2 – Communication in care settings. F911.

Coursework guidance and requirements

This piece of coursework is out of 50 marks. You will be assessed through four assessment objectives (AO)

Time line for assignment submissions- all work to be handed in during the timetabled class of the week identified.

Deadlines will be identified in class.

Evidence to be submitted

Task 1- written work, bibliography/source list
Task 2- Written work, bibliography/ source list
Task 3- Written work, questionnaire (if applicable) and source list
Task 4 – Written work, bibliography/ source list.

All work must be typed in size 12 font, not bold or in italic except when you think it is appropriate.
All work is to be referenced throughout
All pages must be numbered neatly and correctly.
A bibliography must be included at the end of the assignment.
All work must be annotated with the assessment objective throughout

(Part 1) (AO1)

The following tasks must be presented in a structured, logical and sequenced piece of writing including a bibliography. A01 is made up of two parts

Using a variety of research methods write an in depth account about the different types of communication.

TIP- REMEMBER TO HAVE A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF WHAT IS MEANT BY COMMUNICATION

This must include strengths and weaknesses and examples of how they can be used in a Health and Social care setting (the same setting throughout for all types of communication)

Types of written communication.
Oral communication.
Types of Computerised communication.
Special methods to include Braille, makaton , hand alphabet, sign language
Non verbal communication

(Part 2) (AO1)

Discuss how communication could be enhanced (improved) and inhibited (prevent) by the following;
Positioning.
All emotional factors listed (each factor to be discussed individually)
All environmental conditions listed (each factor to be discussed individually)
Equality and diversity and the affect this has on communication being enhanced and inhibited.

For each type of communication listed you must also describe in detail how effective communication can make a service user feel valued.

Use at least two examples for how each type of communication can be used in the context of a residential home for elderly people OR a Nursery.

Remember to make reference to how values of care underpin communication in your chosen setting.

Using four different communication skills from the following list:
-tone of voice,
-pace of voice
- eye contact
-gestures
-facial expression
-questioning skills
-verbal skills to include clarifying, summarizing, paraphrasing, empathizing and prompts and probes Write a detailed account that includes the following points 1. An in depth account of what is involved in each communication skill
(Remember to define a skill)

2.Give reasons why you have chosen the 4 communication skills in relation to a care worker who works in a residential home or a Early years Key worker

3. Give examples of how these communication skills are used to make service users from your chosen health and social care setting feel valued and supported and how they apply the care values when using the communication skills you have chosen.

Using at different sources of information, research the two following theories of communication and please ensure the following points are covered and included in this piece of writing

Tuckman’s sequential theory of group formation.

The SOLER principle.

A detailed description of what each theory involves.

A detailed explanation of how each theory gives guidance on effective communication.

How each theory can be used in the residential setting mentioned in AO1 with a reference to care values.

A detailed description of the effects each theory has on service users in your chosen health and social care setting whenit is being used and not being used.

Task 4 (A04)

For this section you are required to carry out a one to one interaction where you will be observed and marked on your communication skills.

You will need to include the following points in your evaluation

A detailed evaluation about your performance

Recommendations for improvements.

Identification of the communication skills you used, why you used them and how it made your service users feel.

Explanation of how you used the care values.

Reference to factors that inhibited your communication and what you did to overcome them.

Evaluate the effectiveness of your communication from the viewpoint of your service user.
