Child Care Center Health Policy
It is import to realize that illness can be spread very quickly in a group child care situation. It is understandable that parent rely on the facility to care for children on a regular basis, but children will have to be sent home when there is evidence of a contagious illness. When a child appears to be sick, he/she will be kept away from the group as much as possible. In the meantime parents will be called to pick up their child. The child will be kept comfortable and given food and liquids as is appropriate or when requested by parents. A staff member will remain with an ill child, or they will wait in the main office with the Director until the parent arrives. It can be difficult to gauge when a child is actually ill. It is possible that the child may be tired or simply having a bad day. This center will maintain a detailed health record and will be familiar with the child’s typical daily behavior. The staff is also trained to recognize the symptoms of various illnesses. When deciding to send a child home the following symptoms will be considered: fever - 100.4 degrees or higher, deviation from each child’s usual behavior such as: loss of appetite, significant change in napping pattern, lack of energy, listlessness, irritability, exhaustion, continuous crying , constant attention seeking (needy), inability to cope or cooperate with peers and verbal complaints made by the child. The following illnesses will constitute automatic exclusion for the day:
Fever
Lethargy
Diarrhea
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Vomiting
Rashes/Sores
Ear Infections
Influenza
When a child is seen by a doctor please obtain a note with the diagnosis and the date the child may return to child care.
It is also necessary to submit medical forms from your health provider that indicate that immunization records are current and provide general health info. Medications will not be administered without written consent
