On March 23, 2010 President Barack Obama signed The Affordable Care Act, also known as health care reform, into law. (whitehouse.gov, 2013) The Affordable Care Act has brought on a lot of controversy within our country mainly because the people who oppose the new act are not well informed on what the aspects of the new law entail. With so many details to this new law, it is no wonder why so many American’s are confused; the Affordable Care Act is meant to help us not to hurt us.
Access to Care There are many ways in which the health care reform bill will expand the nation’s access to care. The first w ay we have an expanded access to care is with the right to appeals in the event that the insurance company denies your claim. However not only do you have the right to appeal, “If the plan refuses you can get a neutral decision from an outside review organization. And that decision won 't merely be advisory, as it has been in some states. If you win, your insurer will have to pay for the benefit it denied.” Another way that health care reform will expand access to care is by allowing a parent to have their children on their insurance plan until they are 26 years old; in fact this is mandatory whether the child is a student or not.
