Health Care Reform: where are we going in the US?

March 22, 2011 On May 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed one of the most significant and life changing bills in America today. This bill is known as the Health Care Reform Bill. Under the umbrella term Health Care Reform, falls the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), as well as the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010. According to the health care reform, Americans will gain greater access to health insurance or health coverage by a series of changes in the coming years. As the years have past and technology has advanced, scientists and other professionals have proven that the first step to a healthy population is health promotion and preventive care. On top of the millions of people that will now be insured, due to the health care reform, this bill has already put into effect government funding for state mandated programs such as smoking cessation. This implementation alone will help to decrease one of the leading causes of death in America. As the years move forward, approaching 2014, when US citizens will be required to carry insurance coverage, insurance plans will also have evolved. Insurance companies will be required to provide plans that do not charge a fee for preventive care and services. As a whole, the US population, will begin to take advantage of services and care that before may have been avoided due to the strenuous costs. We will begin to learn a healthier lifestyle that we did not have access to before. The health care system as a whole will begin to accomplish its goals that focus on primary and preventive care rather than secondary and tertiary care. Jobs for all health care personnel will expand, with the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010, by providing more government funding for reconstruction of medical facilities and developing new facilities.
