Health Field Admission Essay
My interest in the health field dates back to when I was twelve years old. My grandmother had suffered a massive stroke and the left side of her body was paralyzed. From that very moment in our lives, I became very involved with the paperwork and the health of my grandmother. I have witnessed the effect on her as well as my family of her stroke, craniotomy, heart attacks, seizures, chest pains, amputation of her leg, therapy, to so much more. Yes, this was a huge impact on my life as a young individual, but it allowed me to mature. With the great guidance from my school and family members it was a part of my life that I was able to get through. Learning what she went through, translating the comments from doctors to my parents, and vice versa, and informing my grandmother and my parents what the use of each …show more content…
When I entered college I wasn’t sure I wanted to look into the health field. I did ultimately decide to go on the pre-health track and am in the process of determining what field and role in the medical field I want to pursue. I have thought about professions I want to consider which include pharmacist, physician assistant, or a physician. I have realized that I need to gain a different kind of experience in health care and there will lie the key to my decision. I might know about different services and roles in the medical profession but I don’t understand how the doctors work individually and how they all work interdependently with other medical staff . I have no clinical experience or any practice related to the health field, which is why I hope a program such as the Health Careers Opportunity Program can offer me that invaluable experience. I am a social, investigative, and enterprising individual who is willing to communicate, lead, and guide others and am anxious to identify my niche so that I can prepare

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.” The curiosity that Samuel Johnson refers to in this quote is something that I feel itching at me every day, especially since I have begun my journey in the world of medicine. Through my experiences, I have realized that Internal medicine is the field in which I will be able to use my compassion towards others, not only to help them, but also to constantly nourish my own curiosity for medical knowledge.…

“To me the distinguishing characteristic of professional nursing is clinical thinking, every patient, whether well, getting sick, being sick or getting well has the right to a nurse who by virtue of this clinical thinking, manages the nursing care and is accountable for that care.” It would be a blessing to be a student of a prestigious program that was founded by the honorable late Ms. Dorothy M. Smith. Her aspiration and dedication to the program to feed and educate hungry minds is phenomenal. Being a former biology major, I was never enthusiastic as I am being a nursing major. Nurses are the glue that holds hospitals, clinics and nursing homes together. Desiring a Bachelor of Sciences in nursing, I plan to hold a position as a RN. Furthermore, I will continue my education to gain a doctorate in nursing. Attending University of Florida’s nursing program to achieve my career goals is a dream of an aspiring nurse. With the University of Florida’s academic standing, student involvement, comfortable environment and cheerful staff, being a part of the program is a beneficial plus. Entering college, my goal was to graduate with a Bachelor in biology and then attend medical school, to pursue a career as a pediatrician. However, a few complications arouse and that goal was short-lived. I am always told; never give up, on yourself and your dreams. Itching for the need to stay in the medical field, I decided on nursing. Deciding to get both my bachelors and masters rather than only my bachelor was the best decision I made. I decided on becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practioner. My career goal will not be achieved easily. It is a guaranteed package of gray hair, sweat, stress, gallons of Starbucks and dreams of my bed. I can be certain that I will be pushed to my limit to become the best nurse I am capable of being so that I am able to care for my patients the best way that I can. Previously having attended University of Florida, there was not a day I regretted saying yes to…

This millennial generation is key in determining health care years from now. There must be a rallying up of diverse young students who are interested in pursuing a career in health. Oftentimes, it is intimidating and sometimes discouraging for minorities to really commit to going after a health care career due to the stigma that has been created due to the types of people who have taken and are taking the healthcare field by storm. Encouragement, information, training, and exposure can all be beneficial to a young minority student who is wanting to go into health. Things should take place and be done way before medical or graduate school. The Summer Health Professions Education Program is a great example of a program that is taking the initiative to do something to help students way before medical school. This program is designed to recruit and prepare young, diverse, underrepresented students who will lead in health care. The impact that programs like this have made and will continue to make is astounding.…

Throughout my education, science based courses have been a central core. One course that left an indelible mark was called, “Medical Careers”. I had the invaluable opportunity to shadow and learn hands-on material from both doctors and nurses at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital. It was not until then that I decided to pursue a career in the medical field. However, in such an extensive field, it was difficult to narrow down to a single profession.…

Former President Theodore Roosevelt said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Finding that “work worth doing” has been quite the challenge for me, but I believe I have found it now. Medicine was not the first passion I sought. It was actually to become a pilot because my father used to be one. But possibly pursuing a career in the healthcare industry did come about when I was 9, after I saw pictures of my dad’s arthroscopic knee surgery and the x-ray which completely amazed me. Seeing my dad’s recovery process from such a major operation, along with multiple family members and friends become physicians themselves gave me much insight to the profession. I was able to see a knee operation similar to my dad’s while shadowing Dr. Robert Foster at Texas Orthopedics, where I was also allowed to stand right next to Dr. Foster and assist in handing him the surgical tools and listen to him telling me exactly what he is doing throughout the procedure. And then, following a morning of operating was the afternoon clinic hours at which I got to see the patient-doctor interaction happen, where I got to see assurance of recovery in the patients and trust in the doctor develop and grow. The experience only kept encouraging me to strive for a rewarding career.…

The patient intake process, simply said, is the process of taking information to establish new patients into your facility. This process is almost never the same between facilities, however no matter how it is done, it is very time consuming. The process can also involve updating already established patient’s information. You do this simply by reviewing their information with them to make sure that it is all the same. Once they are finished providing you with any new or updated information it will need to be entered manually into your computer system for future reference. All new patients will have multiple forms and consents to complete before they are able to visit with that physician. These forms mainly consist of their demographic…

With globalization and the availability of countless opportunities in our society, nothing truly makes one person completely unique from a group of people that share the same interest. But when the reason or motivation behind that interest is analyzed, a person becomes defined in an essential way. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a doctor. My passion for becoming a health care professional, who serves for the betterment of people in our society, has influenced my whole life. My interest in healthcare was sparked by the experiences I had with my uncle.
