The purpose of this meal program is to make available a low-cost free meal to the children of schools so that they keep a balanced nutritional diet along with study. This program started under National School Lunch Act, which is appropriately signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.…
This is an extension of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society program (Klein, 2015). Johnson’s heart was in the right place but after being tweaked so many times I think that government bureaucrats lost sight of the reason for the original act by Johnson. There was such a focus on competing with other countries that children truly got left behind. The government put so much pressure on schools for their students to perform well on testing that schools had no choice but to start teaching to the test and leave other ways of teaching lessons on the back burner. I was a representative on the school board for our school system here where we live, we had the discussion of NCLB many times. One thing that we had discussed about the NCLB is how mentally disabled students were to take the same testing as the other students, and the testing not taking into consideration that those students would never be able to perform to those…
Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…
A “flagship” of the new plan, along with the reduction in sodium and high sugar sources, is the new two thousand calorie meal plan. Now, a large complication with this is that this two thousand calorie meal doesn’t change at all. Whether it be Elementary School or High School. A large high school who does various activities in school or after require many more in order to at least feel full enough to continue on. It’s hard to imagine how they could possibly function with so few calories compared to the amount they burn in a given day. This is simply unhealthy for many students. Whether or not they eat the food this “healthier” food it’s overall less healthy for the growth of…
I could imagine a program like this being created for every elementary, middle and high school across the United States. Imagine every child having free or low cost online access to a tutor for assistance with assignments, being able to access all articles and full books online from home, a forum where students and teachers could share helpful with their classes. I’ve noticed that more college students have access to these resources than other children who could benefit from it, but eventually each college student has to pay for all resources that were used. I believe that maybe it’s time our education system gets the upgrade that it deserves where everyone can have access to resource at very little to no…
The most obvious change is that a half cup of fruit or vegetables will be served with every lunch. If school districts don’t comply with the new mandates, they won’t be reimbursed by the federal government for their lunch program. The school lunch changes are a responsible response to what health experts call an epidemic. An estimated 23 million children and teens in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. That prevalence puts nearly a third of the country’s kids at early risk of a litany of diseases usually associated with adults with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.…
School lunches are a big part of our schools. They feed us every day and make sure we are full. They feed us food, but they don't feed us very healthy food. Parents have tried very hard to get that to change for their children. I think they should improve our lunches to make sure that kids are getting the food and nutrition they need.…
VII. A rotten deal for schools? An assessment of states’ success with the National School Lunch Program’s in-kind food benefit, Food Policy, By: Cora Peterson…
You would think that with evidence of an epidemic everywhere, Americans would begin to take the rise of obesity seriously, but I have found otherwise. With two thirds of the population overweight or obese, doctors are worried this could be the first generation since the Civil War to have a shortened life expectancy. But who is to blame? Though some say it’s the fast-food industry, others argue it’s the parent’s fault. In recent discussions of obesity, one controversial issue has been whether the government has gone too far in invading personal rights. On the one hand, Jeff Winkler in his article “Most Americans oppose Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” surveyed citizens on how they feel on this issue and respondents argue that parents should have the ultimate say in their child’s diet. On the other hand, Jeff Richards in his article “Healthy, Hunger Free-Kids Act” and Karen Ball in her article “Parents, Principals Don 't Like School Lunch Rules”, both agree with First Lady Michelle Obama, contending that national obesity is not only an economic threat but also a national security issue, therefore, government is doing the right thing by taking action. I agree with Michelle Obama and I endorse the US Department of Agriculture’s decision to take a historic step towards reducing childhood obesity by putting new nutrition standards on school lunches.…
There are a lot of benefits if school districts all decide to pay the students in one way or another. It will encourage them to be successful and give them goals that the students could easily reach. If they test students each year then they can save up all the money that they earn for college or even use the money to invest in some sort of education. College isn 't for everybody though, not all schoolchildren have the intellectual capacity to reach "basic achievement" levels…
Unfortunately, these efforts have shot back at the parents with rules from the school that go against the constitutional rights to raise their child the way they please. The school’s new rules have only impeded the progress of child obesity. Brownbag lunches have been banned…
The state of school lunches has been a point of debate for many since Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law December of 2010, giving full authority to the USDA in setting the nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in school lunch lines, stores, and vending machines. The law was set to provide additional funding to meet the updated standards, however, the cost was severely underestimated. Using data provided by Medicaid, eligibility for the free or reduced school lunch programs has seen a definite increase, although participation has not (Lee, 2010). In a press release, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was quoted saying “The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is a significant step forward in our effort to help America's children thrive and grow to be healthy adults... By increasing the number of students eligible to enroll in school meal programs and improving the quality of food served, this legislation simultaneously tackles both hunger and the obesity levels currently affecting too many communities across this nation.” I would like to draw attention to her careful wording of “...step forward in our effort...” A subject as incredibly important as the nutrition of…

In this school choice program, the vouchers for government paid tuition to a private school, or the transfer to another public school would be exclusively offered to low income families. This would then send poor students from failing schools to high scoring public or private school. First off, these well scoring schools will become crowded and over attended. A cap could be placed on the number of voucher students these schools could take, but that would defeat the purpose of the bill. Secondly, with more students coming from the high amount of failing schools Louisiana has, the student to teacher ration will be massively reduced at well scoring public and private schools. With that same issue in mind, school resources are already limited and will quickly be de-plenished. With out the ability to continue buying more and more resources, and with out the ability to hire more and more teachers, schools will become weak and…
