The novel I read is titled Soldier's Heart written by Gary Paulsen. The book consisted of 128 pages which seemed to be a fairly easy read in my opinion. Soldier's Heart is a historical war novel that is based on a true story of a boy who joins the Union Army. Gary Paulsen writes about his main character that takes you on an adventure from Winona, Minnesota all the way to the battle fields of Gettysburg where the novel ends. The location is also spread across the United States cities such as in Chicago, St. Louis , many of the main battle fields of the civil war for example the Battle of Bull Run. The book takes place in a span of about seven years from 1861 through 1868 when the main character finally dies from earlier war related wounds that at the time were incurable.…

He comes to General Longstreet with information about the whereabouts of the Union army, who to Longstreet’s surprise, are nearby. This causes the Confederate army to reposition at Gettysburg. The battle begins on July 1st when the Confederates attack some of the Union army in the hills nearby Gettysburg. General Lee believes that the Confederates should be able to win this battle and engages the union armies utilizing varying tactics, he attacks the Union army’s left and right flanks and then attempts to divide they’re central strength to win the battle that way. I decided to read this book to learn about more about the Civil war and the Battle of Shiloh. With all the controversy currently going on about the Confederate monuments, I needed to be more informed about the Civil war. The most interesting part of the battle was the skirmish that was known as “The Hornets Nest”. The skirmish lasted about seven hours. The gunshots were so voluminous that they was thought to sound like a swarm of hornets. The Battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6th & 7th, 1862, in Tennessee, about 20 miles Northeast of Corinth, Mississippi. General Albert Sidney Johnston commanded the Confederate…

This first entry into the book showcases the side of the southern Confederate armies, who were comparing the Civil War to the Revolutionary War. They saw their enemies, the Northern Yankees, as nothing more than tyrants trying to oppress the south. Just as the British had done to the colonists a century and a half ago. This gave them a "holy cause of southern freedom", a reason to step into the shoes of their famed forefathers and once again fight for their liberties and constitutional rights.…

The Civil War was one of the nation’s bloodiest wars in history, and there is so much more to it than the average person knows. “Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara does a fantastic job of ‘opening the doors’ into the true struggles of the Civil War. The book begins from a spy’s perspective, on his way to Longstreet to inform him of the Union Army’s position. The news caught Longstreet off guard because General Stuart was supposed to be on the lookout for the Union Army. It takes a while for him to convince his colleagues that they need to trust this spy because most of them want do not believe that Stuart would leave them blind as he gallivants around, getting publicity in the north. Longstreet decides to trust the spy and moves towards Gettysburg. At this point, the generals have no idea of the violent battle that is about to take place in Gettysburg. Meanwhile, Colonel Chamberlain is informed that men disbanded from the Old Second Maine. These men have decided not to fight in protest. Chamberlain delivers a very inspiring speech, and great detail is given describing his excellent speech giving skills. All but six of the men decide to join Twentieth Maine. Longstreet is completely astounded by this, but grateful. On the morning of July 1st, Stuart is still nowhere to be found. Stuart is very important to the Confederate Army; he is their eyes when it comes to knowing the location of the Union Army. Meanwhile, the battle at Gettysburg begins when the Confederates attack Buford’s men. Day one at Gettysburg ends with the Union retreat into the hills. This makes Longstreet anxious; hills are very good defensive positions. Though they should swing around to attack from behind, he knows that is not what General Lee wants to do. The next day, Chamberlain wakes up and his regiment begins moving towards Gettysburg. They run into an escaped slave on the way, and Chamberlain ponders his feelings towards the war and race. Chamberlain’s regiment is put on Little Round Top as…

In Bill O’Reilly’s thriller Killing Lincoln he opens the book with shifting point of views between Lincoln’s killer, John Wilkes Booth, and the front lines of the increasingly hostile Civil War. Taking place at the end of the war, O’Reilly goes into great detail describing the malicious battle between two famous generals. Robert E. Lee, general of the confederate army and Ulysses S. grant, general of the Union forces. Detailed plans for battle and battle strategies are explored for both the Union and the Confederacy. Lincoln’s hopes and fears for the end of the war and the end of the Confederacy are exposed as the book counts down the days leading up to his death. Important battles such as the battle for High Bridge are documented through primary…

It started on July 21, 1861 at Manassas, Virginia. The day Confederates decided to go North and get the Union. What the Confederates didn't know was the territory which helps benefit the Union. Soon many northern citizens rode out to see the battle had to quickly leave and head back to the capital Washington. The Union troops started to panic after they heard the Confederates were coming. They left later in the day and were 25 miles away from Washington D.C. . My son wrote “We arrived by railroads and there are more troops than we thought, this’ll be a close one.” I received news today that Stonewall Jackson received his name from this war. His real name is Thomas J. Jackson which none of us knew because all the town heard about was “Stonewall…

Yet at the time he and his men were unaware that Union soldiers camped closer to the town. General Lee did not know this because he lacked information on his enemy’s strategy ,or whereabouts ,he was also caught up with some of his men not performing their duties correctly.Another group of his men had gone for supplies and then and there they ran into the union general George G. Meades cavalry which started off the war.…

Mr. President, and Gentlemen of the Convention. If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this Government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South. Have we no tendency to the latter condition? Let any one who doubts carefully contemplate that now almost complete legal combination-piece of machinery, so as to speak-compounded of the Nebraska doctrine and the Dred Scott decision. Let him consider not only what work the ma- chinery is adapted to do, and how well adapted, but also let him study the history of its construction, and trace, if he can, or rather fail, if he can, to trace the evidence of design and concert of action among its chief architects, from the beginning. The new year of 1854 found slavery excluded from more than half the States by State constitutions, and from most of the national territory by congressional prohibition. Four days later commenced the struggle which ended in repealing that congressional prohibition. This opened all the national territory to slavery, and was the first…

Among the events of world history, the Civil War in the USA is one of the central places. Due to this sombre and mourning event, the current population know the names of Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, Ulysses S. Grant, who stood at the head of armies of the northerners; know the names of General Robert E. Lee, who led the armed forces of the slave owners, fanatic Lincoln's assassin named John Wilkes Booth. It is known, how the war ended and who won it. This creates an extremely dramatic history of this war. It is associated with not only the names of the characters, personifying two warring camps, but many battles, sea battles, the most urgent political debate, skillful diplomatic game, and the Union Confederation (during the war, the North and South of the USA were called). It was seeking to obtain the support of the European powers (South) or, on the…

The Civil War has arguably been the most important event that America has undergone. The United State’s Civil War, also known as the War between the States, was fought from April 1861 until April 1865. The war was fought over the issues of slavery and the states’ rights. The Springfield, Spencer, Napoleon, and Gatling gun all helped the North and South in winning the Civil War. A large reason the North defeated the South was because of their advantage in weaponry.…
