Ah Kum is a very obedient girl. Even though she could not take in anymore of the durian, she had forced herself to eat them. She obeyed her Aunty and Chuan Chuan. They forced her to eat all the durians. Even though she could not take in any more of the durian, she “feebly took another seed and brought it to her mouth.” This shows that she complies with her Auntie’s and Chuan Chuan’s command.
Ah Kum is also very sarcastic. She gave her Aunt and uncle a bag of 15 durians just for the two of them. She indirectly wanted to seek revenge to her Aunty and uncle who tortured her when she’s young. She even said “Eat! Eat!” “cried Ah Kum with exquisite triumph. This shows that she was being disrespectful towards her Aunt and uncle because she could not forgive the aunt’s and uncle’s actions towards her when she was young.
Ah Kum is also a very sullen person. She knew her Aunty and Uncle needed help financially. Instead of giving them money she gave them a bag of 15 durians. She indirectly wanted to let her aunty and uncle have the taste of their own medicine. “Aunt Thought the moment was come, and her eye glittered with joy” but actually they were not going to receive what they expected they would get. They instead got a bag of durians. She was mean towards her aunty and uncle. She wanted to take revenge.

Ah Kum and her Aunty have an abusive relationship. Her aunty always abuses her. Her aunty once forced her to eat all the durians as Ah Kum had stolen a piece of the durian flesh. She tortured her and made her eat till she got sick of it. “Four more! You are to eat every one of them, do you hear? Every seed in every one of them!”
Aunty and Ah Kum also have a hateful relationship. Ah Kum hates her aunty because she always get tortured by her and her aunty hate Ah Kum because she find Ah Kum such a burden to the family. Her aunty shows her hate towards Ah Kum by abusing her. Her aunty feels happy whenever she abuses AH Kum “when Ah Kum struggled and retched, a smile came

If a man could not grow yams, he was looked down upon as a failure and a weak man. This standard contributed to the anger that Okonkwo felt for his father, Unoka, a gentle and kind man who did not wish to spend his days farming yams, but rather preferred to play his flute. Once, after visiting the Oracle, Agbala, Unoka was told he, “was known in all the clan for the weakness of [his] hoe,” and to, “go home and work like a man” (17-18). Unoka may not have been the strongest or toughest man, but he possessed a quality that Okonkwo lacked – humanity. The definition of what it meant to be “manly” was so rigidly defined in the Igbo culture and carried with it so many implications that when men failed, sometimes they were incapable of living with themselves. After a particularly terrible year of heavy rains that swept away the yams, “the harvest was sad, like a funeral…one man tied his cloth to a tree branch and hanged himself” (24). This drastic response demonstrates the narrow confines of society and the pressure that men faced to be tough and live up to preconceived ideals of masculinity. Okonkwo understood that, “Yam stood for manliness and he who could feed his family on yams…was a very great man indeed” (33). In Okonkwo’s limited understanding of what it took to be a man, it was inexcusable for his eldest son, Nwoye, not to be a talented and hardworking farmer. Nwoye’s sensitivity and inability to be tough were great failings in Okonkwo’s eyes, and contributed to their unhealthy father-son relationship. The power and symbolism of the yam in Igbo culture was the cause of great celebration, as well as great…

My sisters and I have a tendency to trade phrases like “I hate you” and “You stole another letter, don’t you” throughout the entire game. This mini sibling’s rivalry is something that I could relate to the characters to a small extent, as I don’t think we meant what we say. At least I think so, that my sisters mutually feel that there is no need of deep hatred or murderous plan towards each other. However, in this story, it is not clearly stated the reasons why he hated his wife so much, Maybe it’s just the heat and sweat; maybe it’s just an unhappy marriage. If it’s the second case, the couple should go and meet up with the marriage counselor from the Short Story by Vikram…

"Ah Mah" is a poem about the author’s grandmother. The author, Lim, describes her grandmother in detail and explains how her grandfather "bought" her grandmother. Lim describes her grandmother as a very small and thin woman (10-11). She gives the impression that her grandmother had a hard life even though it appears that the family had enough money. The fact that the family is Chinese is also very apparent due to the many references to Chinese culture that are made as Lim describes aspects of her grandmother’s life.…
