Hemingway Book Banned
Books are banned in America every year for different reasons. Some are allowed in public and school libraries, while others are strictly forbidden due to their nature. Vulgar language, sexual content, and racial slurs are all enough to get a book banned or challenged, especially if allowed in school libraries. This sometimes causes an upset for both readers and the authors who wrote these books because the ban on the book is almost like insult or in this case, a "compliment" to Hemingway. A book is challenged when a group or individual attempts to restrict the accessibility of it because of its materials. The initial “ban” is when the book has successfully been removed from libraries and other sources. What confuses people about the banning …show more content…

In an analysis by Shmoop, they stated that it was “banned from Boston newsstands because the novel was accused of being pornographic.” In my opinion, the reasoning behind challenging this book is not justified enough because the idea of sex is implied, but never clearly said. It is true that the idea of sexual intent is present, but before anything serious happens, Hemingway does a fantastic job of utilizing omission to allow readers to make their own assumptions as to what really goes on in the novel. Another reason that this book should not be banned is because of the level at which it was written. This novel has received many merits for its plot and style that banning it will only be a waste of literature for students and regular readers alike. A Farewell to Arms also serves as a great tool for teachers to analyze Hemingway’s literary work and life with their students. It is not only a great read, but the perfect topic for a research paper such as this one. Students can use this novel to analyze the reasons behind banned books and compare how people back then felt about them versus now. Aside from reading this book for a school essay, it can also be read for the sake of knowing what Hemingway went through during World War I. There are many wartime novels that depict gruesome scenes, but “A Farewell To Arms” is so much more than your typical war story. The love affair described in this novel is like none other because of the easy flowing words used by Hemingway. His style of writing is very vivid and makes you feel as though you are living the lives of the characters in his

A banned/challenged book is material that has been removed because people believe that it is too inappropriate to read. Especially in schools. The reason books are challenged or even banned is that the topics the book covers are sensitive for people to handle. Such as racial themes, profanity, and violence. The novel The Catcher in the Rye would be challenged because it showed a child going through an adult life with vulgar language, sexual references, and underage drinking. After all the reasons why the novel got challenged I still believe that is should not be.…

Even though to be in conflict with society and especially its values and beliefs isn’t easy for many authors to do, Ernest Hemingway breaks out this idea in order to give the reader a deep and provoking novel, mixed with unusual themes for that time in the way they were depicted, like alcoholism and expatriation.…

Things have been banned for centuries because of racial issues, encouragement of damaging lifestyle, blasphemous dialog, sexual situations or dialog, violence or negativity, presence of witchcraft, religious affiliations of unpopular religions, political bias, and age inappropriate (Butler University), the most common initiators of book challenges are parents, and the most common settings for book challenges are schools, school libraries, and public libraries (American Library Association). The first banned book was by William Pynchon and the book was called The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption, it was banned in 1650 right after its release (Stephanie Sylverne). This book was banned because Pynchon apparently “argued a point of Puritan doctrine that was opposed to the usual teachings of the ministers and leaders”, because he was a powerful member of the community, he was not convicted of heresy, but was instead sent away to Springfield to think about what he had done. (Stephanie Sylverne).…

Almost four hundred years later, books are still being banned based on the fear of information. People of religious backgrounds question books which preach atheism, and fear for their religion. Parents question books which detail graphic or adult themes, for fear of their children’s innocence. Fear has been the primary motivator of literary outlawing for centuries, and it encroaches on our right to information to this very day. As Claire Mullally points out in her article ‘Banned…

Not all books that are banned should be but there are some that I see good reasoning for why it has been banned. In my opinion the book I read shouldn’t be banned, but I do see why some readers feel that it should, in the book there is some violence that might be disturbing to a young reader. Also to some young readers they may find the book to be scary. Even with these other points I am still against banning this book and many other books. I encourage anyone who dislikes a book or finds it inappropriate to think about their decision before challenging or banning a…
