Before 1815, Johnson describes the town of Rochester as a place where "town and country were separate worlds"(16). However, with the arrival of the Erie Canal, improvements in inland transportation turned farmers into businessmen, which consequently caused a number of changes to take place. The first of these changes was the restructuring of the employer's household and his interaction with his employees. As a more capitalistic society emerged with the ever growing commerce of Rochester, the master craftsman became more capitalistic himself. Now, the master was concerned with making his products quickly and cheaply. With these more materialistic desires came a decreased concern for the well-being of his employees. Also due to the master's new concern for privacy and shelter from a sin-filled world, employees no longer shared the home of his employer. Without the supervision of a master, workingmen moved into neighborhoods of their own. Johnson provides information that shows with the workingmen all living together, heavy drinking occurred within these neighborhoods. Quickly a negative stigma was becoming attached to anyone who touched the bottle. This is partly due to the fact that the bourgeoisie was quickly becoming aware that "the consumption of alcohol is the center…

No doubt, Gwinnett is one of the fastest growing communities in metro Atlanta, and has been since 1950. Having grown up here, I have witnessed firsthand the growth this community has seen. Much of the data that I wrote into this paper didn’t really surprise me as much as it reinforced my perception of the diversity and growth in Gwinnett County. Based on the recent 2010 census, it doesn’t appear that much is changing in regards to population. Even though this downturn in the economy has resulted in foreclosures and bankruptcies nationwide, it appears that the economy of Gwinnett County has…

Suburbia was exploding everywhere, even in a small town like Carleton Place. Why live in an older red brick home with your neighbors just a few feet away, when you could buy a nice new home on a bigger new lot near the edge of town? Now it was easier to drive to the mall rather than go into town and deal with parking and less choice. No longer were their dishes of ice cream for a nickle--but the Dairy Queen on the highway satisfied all your…

Don started talking about how lovely his childhood was and once he started getting older how Bentonia slowly started to change and he had to get things back to normal. Drug dealers, gangs, and prostitutes started to pop up out of nowhere. No one felt safe and secure anymore some of the town’s people even considered moving to get away from all the crime. Don didn’t want to see his community go down and become another statistic. He knew he had to step in and make a change. My interviewee knew this would not be an easy task but with the help of other elders from the community he knew it could be done. Don and the elders willing to help all got on one accord. Some of the things that surprised me by looking at the census data were the poverty level, number of foreign born persons and homeownership rate. They were each lower than what I had anticipated when I think about Baltimore County. The poverty level and homeownership rate struck me the most because they go hand in hand with showing how tough this bad economy has been on the county. I think the researcher would have only learned about the Business quick facts such as retail and merchant wholesaler sales because that isn’t something the average person living in Baltimore County would know. Something that might be understood just by viewing the statistical data on Baltimore County is that seeing as how we have a pretty large part of the population and a relatively high percentage of people below the poverty line, that we are mainly a lower-middle class region. When the…
