In High Noon Frank Miller was “sent up” for murder by Will Kane who says, “He was supposed to hang, but up north they commuted it to life. Now he’s free-I don’t know how. Any way, it looks like he’s coming back” (Foreman 295). After Kane and everyone in town knew that Miller was coming, they knew he coming to seek revenge on the person who put him away. In “The Most Dangerous Game” the antagonist, General Zaroff, has different intentions than Miller. As the story began, General Zaroff said “‘Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong. In conclusion, the three settings described in the book, the dark night, General Zaroff’s mansion, and the jungle, create suspense in the story Most Dangerous Game. The details in the dark night make the scene feel ominous and give the readers the feeling that something bad is about to occur. General Zaroff’s mansion is seen as to good to be true and there seems to be a sense of danger in the scene. The jungle is dangerous with its predator lurking in depths, which is terrifying for the characters and for the readers. These characteristics are all similar to suspenseful and add special qualities to the…

An author uses literary devices to allow the reader to engage. The author uses descriptive writing to enhance the individual’s imagination. It also gives them ways to relate and a divergent way to think about writing. The three most important literary devices used in The Most Dangerous Game are similes, imagery, and foreshadowing. Richard Connell utilizes these devices to create a fun and inspiring story.…

In Richard Connell’s thrilling short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, an uneasy mood is constructed by Rainsford’s illusive adventure on Ship Trap Island. Many moments in the short story help build up a feeling of uneasy, one being when Winston uses a simile to describe the evil of the atmosphere, saying that the air “ was actually poisonous”, and that he felt a “mental chill, a sort of sudden dread” when the ship neared the island (Connell 1). The author makes the reader feel uneasy by making just the atmosphere itself seem evil and dangerous with the simile comparing the air to something that kills and is to be avoided. Readers also naturally pick up the feeling of dread from Whitney, which significantly helps in building…

I find that the most important part of this story is how the plot moves along so quickly. It also manages to describe successfully each conflict or major part of the story. The key element of the plot is when Zaroff and Rainsford play the game. The main conflict would be external which is man verses man, or Zaroff verses Rainsford. There are three major conflicts of man that can be found in Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game." In the rest of this short essay I will utilize the elements of compositions and also identify and explain the three conflicts of man found in this story.…

The setting of these two stories shows us the isolation of the characters. There is no escape. In High Noon, Kane is trapped in town with no escape from Frank Miller. The town is in the middle of nowhere, with only a single railroad track that leads into and out of town. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford is physically trapped on Ship-Trap island. He can't escape even if he wanted to. The island is in the middle of nowhere, with no other land nearby. These stories both show the feeling of no escape. But, High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game settings are also completely different. Their…

The patterns are different in High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game it shows how Kane was asking for help from the town but nobody was down to help him and how Zaroff was hunting Rainsford. "Maybe some of you already know. If you don't. It looks like Frank Mitchell's coming back on the Noon train. I need as many special deputies as I can get" (Foreman 312). Even after asking for help nobody was down to help Kane to fight Mitchell. "You'll find this game worth playing." Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor…

“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is an intriguing work of fiction that effortlessly combines both aspects of literary and commercial fiction. Connell was able to write a piece that successfully combines fast-paced action as well as upholding literary merit. Not only did Connell write this story with an exciting and adventurous component, he also managed to convey a deeper meaning within the story by allowing his readers to be pulled into the excitement of the story, while also giving them an insight to a darker, more primitive side of human beings. He creatively depicts a unique setting in which the main character has nothing to fear but mankind itself. Connell not only generates…

"Im not trying to be a hero if you think I like this, you are crazy. Amy look, this is my town"(Foreman 296). This proves that Kane the main character in High Noon shows emotion. "The world is made up of two different classes- the hunters and the hunted, luckily you and I are hunters" (Connell 212). This shows that the characters in "the Most Dangerous Game" just throw away their feelings, it's as if they didn't have any feelings at all. Also for High Noon, Kane has never run in his life. The first time he did he couldn't he had to go back to protect his town. This shows how the stories are different because one shows feeling and one…

Perhaps one of the reasons that “The Most Dangerous Game” is still read to this day may be because of the ambiguous ending that this short story has. The way the story is left off leads the reader to many different conclusions as to what happened. Perhaps the two most common inferences would be that either Rainsford realizes that he is becoming like Zaroff, or Rainsford realizes that he is nothing like Zaroff and takes comfort in this. There is much evidence that supports both of these theories.…

In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the story's protagonist Sanger Rainsford is hunted throughout the jungle of an uninhabited island, by General Zaroff a man who is fixated on hunting humans for sport. In the short story “Lady or the Tiger?” by Frank Stockton, an imperious, semi-barbaric king rules over his kingdom with an iron fist, when his daughter falls in love with a young man he uses this opportunity to put the man in a public arena, where his is given the option of marriage or death. The setting in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is essential to make the plot credible. For example, in order for the plot to work, the story must be set on an island. Once Rainsford gets to the island, he meets a general who loves to hunt. The story has to be set on an island so Rainsford cannot escape from the general’s game. When Rainsford comes face to face with the general, he realizes that there is no escape from the general. “He saw that straight flight was futile; inevitably it would bring him face to face with the sea” (11). Rainsford does not have the option to escape the island. Furthermore, the island must be surrounded by large rocks. This is so no ships can get in and get out to expose the general and…

Philosopher Emerson once said “every coin has two sides; so do conflicts”. In the pages of human history, conflicts are unavoidable and while major conflicts such as war have been evil forces in the world it can also produce very positive results. That is not to say conflict is entirely positive. When conflict arises there are those individuals that show unexpected qualities; those assets that are sudden and unforseen. These assets can be seen in the movie The Sapphires through the character Dave and on a global scale through Mandela. Unfortunately there are also those individuals who in the midst of conflict express unexpected negative traits. This can be seen through the characters Gail and Kay in The Sapphires and most recently through Eddie McGuire. Ultimately, until individuals are challenged we will never truly know how they will react.…

In a conflict, each person will have their own view of the situation at hand and react differently. As the old saying says, there are two sides to every story. For example, let’s say you have a couple that gets into an argument or should I say, a conflict, about their child spilling juice on the living room carpet. The mother may view it as being a simple mistake and can easily be cleaned, whereas the father may make a big deal out of it. Obviously, both perspectives are different based on their reactions.…
